The Detroit Lions are riding high so far this season, and their record is a healthy 3-1 heading into their Week 5 game against the 2-2 Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, October 5. The Lions are in good company, because the only undefeated teams so far this season are the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, so the team is just one step off from that record.
But, the Detroit Lions‘ former coordinators can’t say the same. Ben Johnson is with the Chicago Bears, and their record is 2-2, while Aaron Glenn is with the New York Jets, and they sit at, get this, 0-4.
That has to hurt for Glenn. When he was defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, he helped the team blossom into one of the best franchises in the NFL. But, he took on a doozie of a team with the Jets, and there’s a lot that needs to be done to get that team into shape. Now, it appears that after the team’s latest loss to the Miami Dolphins on Monday, September 29, he lost his cool a bit, which is understandable.
Former Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn’s Reaction After Jets Loss
Nobody likes losing, and Glenn is no exception. Following the Jets’ loss to the Dolphins, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reported that things got loud in the locker room. We’re not talking the good kind of “crank that metal music” loud, either.
“Aaron Glenn in the postgame locker room was yelling loud enough for us to hear him in the press conference room,” Rosenblatt stated on X.
Commenters were quick to get in on the discussion. “At some point, this is on the players,” one stated on X. “Coaches don’t tackle, they don’t false start, they don’t over-pursue the offense, they don’t fumble or call a fair catch when they shouldn’t. Players do all those things. Nothing will change until the players get their … together.” Another said, “Yet they blamed Rodgers, Saleh and Ulbrich.”
After the game, Glenn also talked about the Jets’ turnovers and penalties, saying no NFL team is able to pull off a win when they make those costly mistakes.
“Very disappointing. There’s no way you can win any game with 13 penalties and three turnovers,” Glenn said according to Rosenblatt. “But what we have to do is go back to work. We have to understand that before we can win games we have to learn how to not lose games.”
How the Detroit Lions and New York Jets Stack Up
So, the Jets’ are No. 30 in the NFL’s power rankings for this week. “Aaron Glenn watched his offense fumble the ball away twice deep in Miami territory, and his defense allowed a 96-yard touchdown drive in the first half, adding in a slew of penalties for good measure,” Eric Edholm notes on the NFL’s website. Later, he adds, “The Jets have see-sawed back and forth with their efforts, but the bottom line is, they’re still winless. Glenn can’t be happy.”
The Lions, by the way, are No. 3. That’s amazing. “Some tough opponents await prior to the Week 8 bye, and though there’s no panic, Dan Campbell’s group still has a few screws to tighten up,” Edholm states.
What an amazing time to be a Lion, especially after decades of droughts. This Detroit girl couldn’t be happier.
