Teen fatally shot riding his bike to South Chicago school

A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot as he rode a bicycle to school in the South Chicago neighborhood Monday morning, according to a police report.

Officers found the boy in the bushes with several gunshot wounds in the 8300 block of South Baker Avenue around 8:30 a.m., according to the report.

He was identified as Travon Freeman by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was located near his bike wearing an Epic Academy school lanyard. The high school at 8255 S. Houston Ave. is a few blocks from where police found him.

Officers recovered at least 21 shell casings at the scene, according to the report. A witness said she heard about 10 gunshots and saw three people in ski masks stand over the boy and shooting him before driving off in a black car.

Police found the black Hyundai Sonata a few blocks away. It had been involved in an earlier expressway shooting hours earlier, according to the report.

Epic Academy did not immediately return a request for comment.
