The Decemberists are awesome enough on their own.
But add the San Francisco Symphony to the mix?
Wow, that absolutely sounds like it would be one of the best shows of the season.
Bay Area indie-pop fans will get to find out for themselves when The Decemberists combine forces with the San Francisco Symphony at lovely Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco on Oct. 10.
The date is part of a short-run of gigs where the chart-topping band will be performing with symphony orchestras. The other two stops are in Seattle and Portland.
These are the first shows that The Decemberists have done with symphony orchestras since 2007.
We’re expecting that the pairing will prove quite natural, especially given the bold, sweeping nature of the group’s folk-based compositions. And conductor Edwin Outwater, who was also leading the San Francisco Symphony during the famed “S&M 2” shows with Metallica at Chase Center in 2019, certainly seems like the right person to pull this whole collaboration together.
The program has not yet been announced — although we’re hoping to get plenty of tunes from “The Hazards of Love” and “The Crane Wife” as well as a grand version of “The Mariner’s Revenge Song.” But whatever makes the cut should be great.
“Featuring lush symphonic arrangements of selections from (The Decemberists’) expansive catalog, this special collaboration reimagines the band’s music in a bold new light,” according to the symphony’s website.
Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at $175, sfsymphony.org.
