Why Golden State Warriors Didn’t ‘Go Crazy’ This Summer

The Golden State Warriors were unable to make any moves this summer until the Jonathan Kuminga contract situation got finalized. As the dust settled, the Warriors signed Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, and Seth Curry to deals to round out their roster.

Of course, Golden State needed to put a positive spin on its quiet offseason. While the Nuggets, Lakers, Clippers, Rockets, and Spurs gear up for the season, the Warriors were uncharacteristically standing on the sidelines.

As they prepare for the upcoming season, insisting they have title hopes, one key player was credited for their lack of panic.

Warriors Credit Jimmy Butler for Offseason Success

Even after only 30 games with the Warriors, Jimmy Butler has emerged as a clubhouse leader. Still searching for his first ring, Butler carries himself with more seriousness than most NBA players.

This summer, he hosted a minicamp for players to get back in shape. After the Warriors added him, they went 23-7 last season before losing in the second round of the playoffs. With Butler in town, the Warriors didn’t need to go grab a star this summer.

“The addition of Jimmy softened the need for us to go crazy this summer,” Mike Dunleavy Jr. told The Athletic’s Nick Friedell on October 1st. “I think we’re in a much different spot this year than we were last year.”

Until the Warriors added Butler, they were “crazy” for a superstar and were linked to Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, among others. With Butler’s arrival, the Warriors are not expected to be blockbuster players this offseason.

Golden State Warriors’ Roster Is Set

If the Warriors were to make a trade this season, their track record suggests they would swing for the fences and target a superstar. The only way they could balance a superstar’s salary would be by including Draymond Green, which could severely alter the team chemistry.

Despite concerns about the aging core’s health and durability, the Warriors should be seen as title threats. Green, Stephen Curry, and Butler remain one of the best trios in the NBA, and they all have playoff experience to lean on.

Of course, there are questions surrounding the Warriors‘ depth (or lack thereof), but they are one of the few contenders in the entire league where a blockbuster move, at some point this season, is not to be expected.
