Titans Head Coach Gives Honest Assessment of Rookie’s Comments

The Tennessee Titans are now 0-4 and there isn’t a lot of hope in Nashville. There have been questions about quarterback Cam Ward‘s maturity, head coach Brian Callahan’s job security and they were even accused of not wanting to be on the field at one point.

Following Sunday’s embarrassing 26-0 shutout lost to the Houston Texans, Ward gave a pretty honest assessment of the entire team’s performance when he said, “we ass.”

The comments rubbed some people the wrong way and Callahan was asked about it on Wednesday.

“He’s a young player,” Callahan said. “He’s the No. 1 overall pick, he’s the face of the franchise, if you will. He’s got high expectations for himself, and we have high expectations around him, and we all want to meet those.

“His ability to be in that spotlight, in that moment is a growing process for him. He’s growing up, I think he’s starting to understand the weight of his words – what those things mean when he speaks and everyone’s listening and watching. And even though he follows up his commentary with a lot of the right things, it’s the one-liner that gets taken.”

Cam Ward says the comments were overblown by the fans and media

For what it’s worth, I feel for Cam. He’s a guy that’s not used to losing who is now on a team that is. Their 0-4 start to the 2025 NFL season means they have now lost 10 straight games going back to last year. They beat the Texans on November 24th and had lost five of the six games before that.

They gonna blow it up no matter what, whether it’s good or bad for the Titans,” Ward said. “We’re trying to win football games, and that’s the biggest thing, and that’s what we’re trying to go do this week.”

Watching the video of Callahan’s press conference, he doesn’t seem overly thrilled about Cam’s post-game reaction. It’s probably understandable considering saying “we ass” really says it all and it reflects poorly on the head coach.

Would Tyjae Spears help Cam Ward?

The Titans did get some good news this week. That is, if you consider “good news” to be the kind that won’t put a dent in the team’s existing problems.

Running back Tyjae Spears has been designated to return to practice and the Titans‘ running game could sure use some help. Even more so than a good tight end, a running game is a young quarterback’s best friend. Whether or not Spears is any kind of a solution to the running game is up to interpretation.

“We’re going to see where he’s at and see how much he can handle from a conditioning and load standpoint,” Callahan said of Spears. “But certainly, we would like to have him involved. He brings an explosive element and a change of pace that is going to be good for us. Hoping to get him involved as quickly as possible.”

Ward is probably hoping he can help too. If he doesn’t get assistance soon this entire operation is going to fall apart. Cam isn’t going anywhere any time soon, but his coaches and teammates probably are.
