49ers Trade Proposal Brings in 23.0-Sack Star for One Draft Pick

As the San Francisco 49ers head into the bulk of the season, there’s a giant void they’ll have to fill with the injury to Nick Bosa. It’s a tough situation for the 49ers to be in, as the star-edge rusher, who once posted 18.5 sacks in 2022, will be out for the year after an ACL injury. Bosa continued to prove that he was one of the top edge rushers in the NFL, so it’s something San Francisco will have to figure out.

That’ll be much easier said than done, however, as not only is Bosa that good, but there aren’t many other players out there like him. For one, he understands the system that Kyle Shanahan wants to run, and two, there isn’t a perfect replacement.

Despite that reality, Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame proposed an intriguing idea to land Jaelan Phillips of the Miami Dolphins for a conditional fifth-round pick.

“After the season-ending injury to Nick Bosa, the 49ers are in desperate need of pass rushers, especially with an inexperienced defense this season.

“Phillips is still working his way back from significant injuries the past few seasons, but the Dolphins have trusted him enough to play 63% of the defensive snaps this season. At 26, there’s a strong possibility that Phillips can regain his top form in a month or two. The 49ers need an immediate impact player now, but at 3–1, they seem like a good bet to make the postseason,” he wrote.

Would Jaelan Phillips Be a Fit for the 49ers?

While Phillips might not be the perfect player for the San Francisco 49ers to go after, especially if they want someone who can stay healthy, there’s reason to believe that he could be an excellent fit in San Francisco.

The Miami Dolphins are struggling at 1-3, which could mean they have to move on from players like Phillips in the future. On the flip side of that, Philip has dealt with more injuries than many other players in the NFL, suffering another season-ending injury a year ago. He looks good in the early stages of the season with the 11.0 tackles, but has yet to post a sack.

Could 49ers QB Mac Jones Be an Option for Dolphins?

Others believe that the Miami Dolphins could have a potential trade option to pursue in a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Given that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t played well to start the year, they could look at somebody like Mac Jones as a potential replacement. When proposing the idea, Mitchell Blahut of FanSided suggested that the Dolphins could simply send Jones to the Dolphins for Philips straight up. However, the Dolphins don’t have much of a reason to bring in another backup quarterback, especially if there are no picks attached for one of the better edge rushers on their team.

“The 0-3 Miami Dolphins have been falling apart over the last few seasons. And a lot of it can be linked to Tua Tagovailoa’s play at quarterback. When head coach Mike McDaniel was hired, he turned Tua into one of the better passers in the league. During Tua’s first two seasons, he completed about 67 percent of his passes for 8,172 yards and 54 touchdowns to 22 interceptions…

“McDaniel runs a similar offense to what head coach Kyle Shanahan does in San Francisco. Jones would not only be an improvement to what Miami has at backup quarteback in Kyle Wilson, but he would be good competition for for Tua if the Dolphins start to look at different options. Jones would thrive in the Dolphins offense with their weapons, including former college teammate, Jaylen Waddle,” he wrote.
