The New York Giants have enjoyed the emergence of rookie running back Cam Skattebo, but it’s come at the expense of second-year RB Tyrone Tracy Jr, who has been sidelined with a shoulder issue. There was an injury update on Tracy ahead of the Giants’ Week 5 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.
“[Head coach Brian] Daboll said they’ll see what RB Tyrone Tracy can do today,” The Athletic’s NYG correspondent Dan Duggan relayed from practice on October 3. “I don’t think Sunday is realistic for [Tracy], but getting on the field today could have him ready for next Thursday.”
On Tracy, Giants team reporter Dan Salomone also reported a quote from Daboll and the team that the running back is doing “a lot better” as of Friday, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to play. Later, Salomone released the official Week 5 injury designations, which listed Tracy as “doubtful” for the Giants’ matchup with the Saints.
While Tracy may not suit up for Big Blue in Week 5, this is a positive turn of events overall. As Duggan and ESPN NYG beat reporter Jordan Raanan both explained, getting Tracy some work on October 3 gives him a much better chance of returning in Week 6.
“Wouldn’t expect a Tyrone Tracy return this week,” Raanan noted. “But the Giants play on Thursday next week. Might not even have a full practice next week. So this more likely has to do with potentially returning vs. [the Philadelphia] Eagles than [the] Saints.”
This news sets up a clear injury timeline for Tracy, as he’ll likely aim to rejoin Skattebo in the backfield in some capacity in Week 6.
3 Giants ‘Questionable’ for Week 5 vs Saints After Final Injury Update
While posting about the Tracy news, Duggan also added that “Daboll said [superstar defensive lineman] Dexter Lawrence won’t practice today, but he’s getting over his illness and should be ready for Sunday.”
Lawrence was officially listed as “questionable” for the Giants versus the Saints, but that feels like more of a formality.
Along with Lawrence and Tracy’s “doubtful” designation, there are two other NYG injuries that are still “questionable” as of October 3. They are linebacker and core special teamer Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring) and safety Tyler Nubin (groin).
Aside from those three — not counting Lawrence, who appears to be fine — the Giants are relatively healthy heading into Week 5.
Of course, this will be their first full game without superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers, so they aren’t start of OTAs healthy, but they will have most of their current 53-man roster ready to go in New Orleans.
Most important of all, that includes quarterback Jaxson Dart and left tackle Andrew Thomas, who enter Week 5 healthy after some injury uncertainty last weekend.
Giants Must Pressure Saints QB Spencer Rattler After OL Injury News in New Orleans
The Saints ruled out four players on October 3, according to Saints reporter Mike Triplett.
Kellen Moore said Saints CB Isaac Yiadom and WR Trey Palmer have also been ruled out for Sunday, along with DE Chase Young and G Cesar Ruiz,” Triplett noted on Friday. “TEs Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau are officially listed as questionable in their first week back from the PUP list.”
The Ruiz injury stands out, most of all. With second-year fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler starting at quarterback in New Orleans, this is a passer that the Giants can force into some mistakes by applying pressure.
Ruiz’s absence should make that easier for a ferocious NYG front that includes Lawrence, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux.
