The New England Patriots announced themselves to the NFL on Sunday Night Football by handing the undefeated Buffalo Bills a 23-20 loss. It was a defining win for the team, led by former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye. In the wake of this victory, though, Maye found his alma mater and its new head coach, Bill Belichick, making some headlines on Monday morning.
Prior to joining the Tar Heels for the 2025 campaign, Belichick enjoyed a legendary 24-season stint with the Patriots as their head coach. Since leaving, though, there’s been some clear animosity between him and his former team, and a new report indicates that things have reached a new level.
Bill Belichick’s Patriots Directive for His North Carolina Coaching Staff
After blowing out the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, there was a lot of anticipation for New England’s Week 5 matchup with Buffalo. The team responded by picking up one of its most impressive victories in recent memory, with Maye making several wildly impressive throws along the way to guide the Pats to victory.
Highlights of Maye’s performance were all over social media in the wake of this victory. To the surprise of many folks, though, the North Carolina Tar Heels accounts on social media had nothing to say about Maye’s outing. Typically, college football programs are happy to show off what their former players are doing if they turn pro.
To see Maye’s performance not getting shared on any of the Tar Heels’ social media accounts was quite confusing, and there appears to be one big reason for this development. According to a recent report, Belichick has directed his staff not to post about the Patriots at all on social media, likely due to his contentious relationship with the team and its owner, Robert Kraft.
“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” Ross Martin of 247Sports reported in a post on X. That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.
Bill Belichick, Patriots Beef Reaches New Level

Since the Patriots and Belichick parted ways after the 2023 campaign, Kraft has taken his fair share of shots at his longtime coach. After largely remaining quiet, Belichick has fired back on several occasions since taking over as the Tar Heels’ new head coach. Earlier this season, Belichick confirmed that he was not allowing New England’s scouting department to enter their facilities and watch his team play.
It’s petty, but that’s part of what has helped make Belichick so great throughout his coaching career. After getting mopped by the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, though, things aren’t going so great for Belichick with North Carolina, as they have just a 2-3 record through five games. New England, meanwhile, is 3-2, and it is rolling into its Week 6 matchup against the New Orleans Saints with tons of momentum on its side.
