Steven Gerrard is reportedly ‘under strong consideration’ to become Rangers manager again following the sacking of Russell Martin.

But Rangers legend Ally McCoist would prefer to see a different former England midfielder in the Ibrox dugout.

Martin was sacked on Sunday night after just 17 games in charge of the Scottish giants, following a disastrous start to the season.

The former Southampton boss won just one of his seven Premiership games and failed to make the Champions League league phase after a humiliating 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge.

Gerrard has quickly emerged as the frontrunner for the job ahead of former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche and ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

The Liverpool legend began his managerial with Rangers in 2018 and guided them to their first Premiership title in 10 years, going unbeaten in the 2020/21 season.

He would leave just a few months later however for an ill-fated spell at Aston Villa before making a surprise move to Al-Etttifaq.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since leaving the Saudi Pro League side in January and according to the Guardian, the Gers hierarchy are strongly considering bringing him back to Glasgow.

McCoist says he wound’t mind Gerrard returning but believes his former club should have appointed someone else when they had the chance.

‘I wish we’d taken my advice for the last one and that was Frank Lampard,’ the former Scotland striker told talkSPORT, having previously clamoured for the Chelsea legend.

‘That’s what I said, right? My exact tip was Frank Lampard.

‘And clearly Frank is doing exceptionally well now, and I think it would be nearly impossible to get him. But a lot of the people, myself included, I wouldn’t mind at all.

‘In fact, I’d quite like to see Steven Gerrard coming back. After that, we probably missed the boat with Derek McInnes who’s doing a fantastic job at Hearts. Other than that, I’m all ears.’

After difficult spells in charge of Chelsea and Everton, Lampard has done a very impressive job at Coventry City since taking the reins last November.

When he joined, the club were just two points above the championship relegation zone but he dramatically turned their form around to reach the promotion play-offs, where they narrowly lost to Sunderland.

His Sky Blues have started this season brilliantly, unbeaten and top of the table, having scored a staggering 27 goals in nine games.

It is highly unlikely that he would be leave the CBS Arena any time soon, but whoever takes the Rangers job will face Dundee United in their first game on October 18.
