The Dallas Cowboys have needed a few different players to step up in major moments for them throughout the early stages of the campaign, and that was on full display in their Week 5 win against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.Â
Wide receiver Ryan Flournoy, a 25-year-old who hasn’t had much luck in the NFL, had his best game yet. The wideout finished with 114 yards on six receptions, including a 46-yard catch.
While Flournoy might be unknown to the casual non-Cowboys fan, it just goes to show the type of work he puts in behind the scenes. A sixth-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2024 NFL draft, quarterback Dak Prescott has had nothing but praise for him.
He had some very kind words for him after the Cowboys‘ win on Sunday.Â
“You know, going back to those Atlanta trips and just those offseason times, just spending time together and getting to know somebody, that guy has got what an old coach used to say: sh-t in his neck. He wants to be great. Every opportunity and responsibility, he wants to make the most of it, and I think tonight was just an example of just that â of him getting that opportunity and making every play that came his way,â he said, per the team.
Can Ryan Flournoy Be a Go-to Player for Cowboys
Flournoy understands that all opportunities must be seized if he wants to continue to secure them for the Dallas Cowboys. The harsh reality of the situation is that for him to be the player he’s looking to be in this league, he has to make the most out of every chance he gets.Â
Sunday was the perfect opportunity for that, and hopefully, for his sake, he’ll get more opportunities in the future.Â
“Man, it’s so sweet, man,” he said.
“It’s hard, but, you know, you gotta let the food cook.” Flournoy said of waiting his turn. “I knew once I got my opportunity, I gotta run with it. I just had to stay patient, honestly.”
Will Ryan Flournoy Seize His Opportunity?
But while Flournoy played better against the New York Jets than he has against any other team in the NFL, this has to be the beginning of him doing something special for the Dallas Cowboys.Â
CeeDee Lamb is expected to be back for the Cowboys within the next two weeks, so opportunities will diminish. Still, he’s getting more and more chances, and if he continues to play the way he did on Sunday, he’ll have to continue to stay humble, focus on the right things, and make plays when it matters most.Â
He’s done that so far, and as Prescott gave him, praise is necessary.Â
“I play for the Lord,” said a humble Flournoy. “That’s all I do, just a one-man crowd. I just go out there and play and showcase my talent that he gifted me, for sure.”
“Man, all glory to God, first and foremost,” Flournoy added. “Without Him, I wouldn’t even be here and have this opportunity to go out and do what I love, man. It’s special, you know? And the way I play, I play for Him. It’s in Colossians 3:2 that in whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, and that you are working for the Lord, not for men.
