Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence already had one scare at the goal line on Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Lawrence fumbled a touchdown attempt in the first half that allowed the Chiefs to go up 14-0. A second time around in the fourth quarter, Lawrence delivered the game-winning score, but it didn’t come without a glitch in a 31-28 victory.
“We had a good goal-line play that we liked off of low play-action,” Lawrence told reporters afterward. “But never got to see it because it was going down as I came out of center. So, I mean just panic, honestly because I was trying to get up to get the ball out of my hands so the clock — I mean we didn’t have any timeouts.”
“So, I was really going to just stand up and, like, launch it out the back of the end zone. But then I had a little bit of a lane, so I took it and scored from there,” Lawrence added.
Lawrence gave the Jaguars a 31-28 lead with 23 seconds left, and it wasn’t enough for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the end. Mahomes only had one completion for 11 yards on the final drive.
Lawrence completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 54 yards and two scores on just 10 carries — the two at the goal line were just polar opposites.
Trevor Lawrence Talks Magnitude of Beating Chiefs
“I mean, it’s a big win,” Lawrence said. “Obviously, it’s a good team. They’ve been a good team for a long time. They’re hard to beat. They’re really good situationally. Don’t beat themselves.”
“You know, at the end of the game, they’re always in it. They always seem to make the plays,” he added. “And even today, they went down and got some points there and we had to go win it.”
“So, it was cool for us to go take it and have to go win at the end, put together a good drive. It’s just another step for our team. I think showing up on a big stage does say something. You know, it’s a big game,” Lawrence concluded.
Jaguars Looking Like a Contender
Jacksonville improved to 4-1 and now owns one of the best records in the AFC. The Chiefs, meanwhile, dropped to 2-3 in a packed AFC West.
“I mean, we feel like we are,” Lawrence said about being a contender. “So, I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but we’ve got a long season. We’ve played five games, so there’s a lot of football left.”
“We have to take it week by week. Obviously, we think we’re a good team, so we believe that,” he added. “You don’t listen to the outside noise and not many of those people were around beginning of the season.”
“So, it’s really about the guys in the locker room, the staff, coaches and all the people that put the work in and we have that confidence and belief. That’s what matters,” he concluded.
