Steve Kerr Opens Up on Warriors Future Amid Speculation

The Golden State Warriors are less than two weeks away from tipping off the 2025–26 season against the Los Angeles Lakers. For Steve Kerr, it marks Year 12 in the Bay — and the final season on his current contract.

Questions about Kerr’s future naturally followed him into camp. But if you’re expecting a “Last Dance” storyline, he isn’t buying it.

Kerr Says He’s Not Treating It Like the End

Speaking on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami, Kerr said he’s perfectly at ease entering the season without an extension. His focus, he explained, is on the fit — not the finish.

“I just want to make sure everything feels right — for me, for the players, for the organization,” Kerr told Kawakami on the podcast. “There’s always an expiration date with coaching jobs, and if it stops clicking, that’s when it’s time to go. But I don’t think we’re there.”

Kerr emphasized that he still enjoys working with Mike Dunleavy Jr. and his veteran core. He’s not approaching this year like a farewell tour, even if the topic naturally hovers in the background.

“I love what I do,” Kerr said. “I’d imagine I’ll keep doing this. By no means am I looking at this as the last dance or my last dance.”

Why the Warriors Are Taking Their Time

From the front office’s side, there’s no urgency to rush. Dunleavy said last week he “selfishly” hopes Kerr remains with the team long term. But both sides seem to prefer seeing how this season unfolds before putting pen to paper.

Kerr’s two-year, $35 million deal — signed in February 2024 — made him one of the NBA’s highest-paid coaches. Now, entering the final year of that agreement, he appears content to play things out before deciding what’s next.

The timing makes sense. With Stephen Curry and Draymond Green each under contract for two more seasons, and Jimmy Butler signed through 2027, Kerr’s tenure still aligns with the core’s championship window.

Both he and Dunleavy understand that any decision about the coaching staff is tied to how well this group performs — not sentimentality.

Warriors Still Believe in the Core

Despite recent turbulence, there’s no denying what Kerr’s built in Golden State. He’s coached the Warriors to four championships, weathered roster turnover, and navigated the tricky balance of developing young talent while keeping stars engaged.

The belief within the organization is that if Kerr, Curry, and Green remain aligned, the team still has enough to compete at the highest level.

Kerr, for his part, agrees. He’s not thinking about exits or new jobs. He’s thinking about basketball — about maximizing what’s left of this dynasty.

“Maybe by the All-Star break we’ll say, ‘Hey, this is going to keep going,’” Kerr said. “For now, let’s just see where this all goes.”

No declarations. No drama. Just another season of basketball — and maybe, one more chance to prove the dynasty isn’t done yet.
