The Buffalo Bills became the last team to suffer their first loss of the 2025 campaign when they were handed a 23-20 defeat by the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football. While many folks have gushed over the Patriots’ performance, it’s also worth noting that for much of the night, the Bills played a very sloppy game of football.
That started on the offensive side of the ball, where Buffalo committed three turnovers and several big penalties that stalled them for much of the night. That led to head coach Sean McDermott criticizing the unit for being “too cute” in this loss, but that doesn’t appear to be an assessment that offensive coordinator Joe Brady agrees with.
Joe Brady Fires Back at Criticism of Bills’ Offense
Through the first four weeks of the 2025 campaign, the Bills had established themselves as the premier offense in the league, thanks in large part to Josh Allen’s dual-threat ability under center. With Allen carving up defenses in the air and leading a dominant rushing attack alongside James Cook, opposing defenses were having a very difficult time slowing this group down.
Against the Patriots, things were different. Buffalo was unable to establish its run game, and aside from Dalton Kincaid, no one was able to consistently get open in the passing game. New England’s defense played a good game, but the Bills did not lean on Allen enough when they needed to, and it ultimately cost them.
Brady came under fire for his play-calling in this game, which is par for the course when your team loses. While Brady admitted that some of Buffalo’s more creative play designs did not go their way, he ultimately credited it to the way New England’s defense was playing, rather than pinning the blame on his offense.
“I don’t think there was any being cute,” Brady said on Monday. “I think it was more of, especially early, trying to get a feel of … the different type of defensive structures that they were playing, how the game was being played, and trying to get a feel of that.”
Bills Turn Attention to Upcoming Week 6 Action

At the end of the day, Brady’s play calling wasn’t the biggest issue for the Bills: it was their three turnovers. With the Patriots only turning the ball over once, that was always going to make it tough for Buffalo to win. Brady probably made some calls he wishes he could take back, but that’s how things go in the NFL sometimes.
The only thing the Bills can do moving forward is focus on getting better, and they will have an opportunity to do that in Week 6 when they square off against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football. Through four games, the Falcons have been fairly inconsistent, but they also feature a defense that could give Buffalo’s offense some trouble. The Bills will still be heavily favored to win, though, and if all goes according to plan, they will exit this game with a 5-1 record.
