The Detroit Lions failed in their attempt to add some veteran help to their secondary after a series of injuries.
NFL.com insider Mike Garofolo reported that the Lions had plans to sign veteran cornerback Michael Davis, trying to lure him away from another NFC team but ultimately failing.
Lions Looking for Cornerback Help
The Lions needed some help in their secondary after losing starters D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold to injuries. Reed has been placed on injured reserve, but the team said he is expected to return this season. The team opted against I.R. for Arnold, but he is still expected to miss this week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 30-year-old Davis was a logical target for the Lions. The 30-year-old has appeared in 122 games over his career with 76 starts. He made 363 career tackles and eight interceptions.
Davis last played with the Washington Commanders, serving as a reserve cornerback last season.
Lions Catch Break on Terrion Arnold’s Injury
The Lions initially faced some tough news on Arnold, with the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reporting early on Tuesday that the cornerback would “likely” miss the remainder of the season with an injured shoulder.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared a more optimistic update later in the day, saying Arnold would miss a long stretch but would be able to return at some point this season.
The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy and Jeff Howe later reported that Arnold could miss less than a month, with a trip to injured reserve not likely.
The Lions went from potentially losing Arnold for the rest of the 2025 season to potentially getting him back by the end of October. Thatâs huge news for this team. Based on this timeline, it doesnât seem like an injured reserve stint is warranted.”
While the Lions will face a long stretch without two of their top cornerbacks, The Athletic’s report noted that both could return around the same time.
The Lions could be getting fellow starting CB D.J. Reed (hamstring) back around that time as well â heâs eligible to return in Week 10 against the Commanders,” the report noted. Weâll see what the Lions do, but the fact that Arnold is now expected to return is a huge boost to a secondary that will need him.
After losing out on Davis, the Lions may still need to find some outside help to shore up their cornerback depth until their starters are ready to return. John Whiticar of SB Nation’s Pride of Detroit predicted the team would follow their past pattern and add a veteran free agent like James Bradberry, Stephon Gilmore, or Asante Samuel Jr.
“When the Lionsâ front seven was battered last season, they signed players like Kwon Alexander, Jonah Williams, Jamal Adams, and Ezekiel Turnerâplayers with a track record of contributing on defense or special teams in a sizeable capacity,” Whiticar wrote. If the Lions are to sign cornerback help in 2025, they will likely follow suit and target starting experience.
