Saquon Barkley Reveals His Giants Contract Demands in New Documentary

Perhaps the smartest move of Saquon Barkley‘s career was leaving the New York Giants to sign with the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. The veteran running back went on to resurrect his NFL career as arguably the best player in the league at his position while also helping lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl title in his first season in Philadelphia.

Barkley’s controversial decision to sign with the Eagles couldn’t have gone better, as he’s now beloved by Eagles fans while arguably being in the conversation for being the new face of the NFL, which is impressive for a running back in a quarterback-driven league.

In the “Saquon” documentary, set to be released on Thursday on Amazon Prime, the superstar running back opens up about his contract negotiations with the Giants and how they ultimately broke down, leading to his signing with the Eagles.

Saquon Barkley Makes Revealing Admission About Giants Contract Talks

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post got a sneak peek at the new documentary, which followed Barkley for five years. An interesting quote from the polarizing superstar revealed the difference between signing with the Giants and heading elsewhere in NFL free agency.

“I would’ve signed for $10 million, $11 million [per year] if they would’ve just operated a whole different way,” Barkley said about contract talks with the Giants. “If I felt in my heart they tried their best to get it done.”

Clearly, Barkley had a soft spot for the Giants, but he also couldn’t deny that the feeling wasn’t mutual, which pushed him to Philadelphia.

Apparently, Barkley even suggested seeking a trade to Giants team owner, John Mara, who had no interest in going that route.

“I’m not going to do that,” Mara told Barkley. “That makes no sense for us. To be honest with you, it’s not going to be in your long-term best interest to do that. There’s no way that I would allow that at this point. You are too valuable to this franchise.”

In the end, it seems that the Giants did everything within their power to push Barkley in another direction, whether intentionally or not, as he definitely felt that he was rubbed the wrong way and not valued in New York.

Although no one knew what to expect from Barkley after he officially left the Giants for the Eagles, the superstar running back seemed to know his worth and was ready to prove it in Philadelphia while also having a chance to compete for a Super Bowl title.

Along with having the play of the year in which he hurdled over a defender backwards, Barkley was an unstoppable force coming out of the backfield for the Eagles, as he brought an entirely different dynamic to the team’s offense. He went on to win the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

Barkley racked up 2,238 yards from scrimmage and 15 total touchdowns to cap off the best season of his NFL career.
