1 dead, another kidnapped after argument leads to shooting and car crash in SoCal

What started as a “verbal altercation” led to a shooting, a fatal car crash and kidnapping in the early hours of Tuesday, Oct. 7 in Montclair, the Montclair Police Department said.

Three people were involved in an argument with another person in the north end of Montclair, a police statement said. The group of three left the area by car and was chased by the other person, a 40-year-old man driving a white SUV, police said.

He reportedly shot at the group of victims. When the victims and suspect reached the 9700 block of Benson Avenue, an area near 4th Street and Buena Vista Elementary, where the suspect rammed into the victims’ vehicle, which then crashed into a tree around 12:45 a.m.

Two victims tried to leave the vehicle, but one was kidnapped by the suspect as she tried to get away. She escaped from him in Ontario and was transported to a hospital.

The second victim’s location was unknown as of Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The third victim was unresponsive at the scene of the crash and was pronounced dead at the hospital on Tuesday. The identity of the deceased was being withheld, pending notification of the next of kin.

Police said all people involved knew one another and the altercation did not appear to be random.

Information on the identity of the suspect and whether he was in custody was not immediately available.
