Michael J. Fox is reflecting on resilience, gratitude, and perspective more than 30 years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

In a recent People cover story, the 64-year-old actor and advocate spoke candidly about adapting to the physical realities of his condition while staying focused on purpose and positivity. “I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it,” Fox shared. “I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it. I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to. You take the good, and you seize it.”

Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at just 29 years old, has long inspired fans through his advocacy work and personal outlook. He continues to lead the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, founded in 2000, while also finding creative ways to stay connected to audiences through his work and writing.

Returning to TV and Inspiring His Peers

After announcing his retirement from acting in 2020, Fox made a surprise return to television in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.” He appears in the third season of the comedy series, which stars Jason Segel and Harrison Ford.

Fox portrays a character living with Parkinson’s — his first time playing someone with the condition on screen. “It was the first time ever I get to show up on set, and I didn’t have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything,” he said. “I just do it.”

Ford, who stars as Dr. Paul Rhoades in “Shrinking”, said having Fox on set brought authenticity and depth to the show. “Michael’s courage, his fortitude and his grace, more than anything else, is on full display,” Ford told Variety, calling Fox “a smart, brave, noble, generous, passionate guy” and “an example to all of us.”

The Indiana Jones actor added that portraying Parkinson’s required care and accuracy. “Parkinson’s is not funny,” Ford said. “We can’t be f—ing around with this just to make a joke. It’s necessary to be correct with what we do.”

Reflecting on His Past While Looking Ahead

Beyond acting, Fox is revisiting his early career in his upcoming memoir “Future Boy”, out Oct. 14. The book recounts the whirlwind year of 1985, when he filmed “Family Ties” by day and “Back to the Future” by night — a demanding schedule that defined a pivotal moment in his life.

Written with longtime collaborator Nelle Fortenberry, “Future Boy” explores the creative challenges and triumphs that shaped his legacy. “It took me a long time to believe that I pulled it off,” Fox said of balancing two iconic roles at once.

Now, decades later, Fox continues to face each new day with the same determination that fueled his early career. “I see other people’s work, and it makes me think that I might be able to find something that’s for me as an actor and as a writer,” he told People. “And as a parent, husband and friend, I have a lot left to do.”
