The San Francisco 49ers faced a major setback on September 22 when they learned Nick Bosa tore his ACL, ruling him out for the season. The news shook the team and prompted calls to pursue a trade to help replace their star pass rusher.
Over the last couple of weeks, several names have emerged in the trade speculation mill. One of them is Cincinnati Bengals‘ Trey Hendrickson. However, CBS Sports NFL analyst Leger Douzable sees the veteran pass rusher as a fit for the Dallas Cowboys as they look to replace the production that Micah Parsons left behind after they traded him.
“[Hendrickson is] a free agent after this year,” Douzable said on the October 7 edition of “CBS Sports HQ.” “If the season is over, why not get draft capital? You obviously don’t see him as part of the future, right? The Cowboys now, [they] are coming off their best pass-rushing game, albeit that might be because of the Jets and how they’ve struggled on the offensive side.
“They had five sacks last week, but you really need some pass rush that [addresses] what has ailed the Cowboys on defense, right? Their secondary is [struggling]. But if you have a pass rush that will help the secondary as well, [then] I think Trey Hendrickson to the Cowboys makes a lot of sense for a third-round pick.”
Would Trey Hendrickson Fit the 49ers?
While teams will certainly be calling the Bengals about Hendrickson, their trade stance probably depends on how well Joe Flacco performs in Cincinnati after trading for the veteran.
Nonetheless, if the move doesn’t go the way that the Bengals planned, then the pass rusher could be on the market before the November 4 trade deadline. Even though there’s a chance that Hendrickson could be moved, Matt Barrows of The Athletic doesn’t see this as a fit for San Francisco.
“Trey Hendrickson is an older, expensive player who turns 31 in December,“ Barrows said during an appearance on 95.7 The Game. “[Trading for him] would run counter to everything the 49ers mapped out [for the season] back in January and February…but situations change.”
The 49ers Do Reportedly Like Trey Hendrickson
Despite these remarks from Barrows, if San Francisco hopes to fill Bosa’s shoes this season, The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami believes Hendrickson’s track record indicates the veteran could match the production the 49ers star provides.
“Hendrickson doesn’t just help their depth,“ Kawakami said during an appearance on 95.7 The Game. “He lifts up everything. He’s your closest Bosa replacement. He might be better than Bosa right now. He has 17.5 sacks over the last two years. No one else has done that…
“I just think Trey Hendrickson, for a lot of reasons, fits kind of the now and possibly down the road. I’d give up a second-round pick for him. Conditionally, they could change to a first. Maybe that’s a little high. They probably don’t want to give up a first. They do have to keep their draft picks, most of them, because they got guys they need to replace down the road.
“But if you know the 49ers, they’ve always liked Hendrickson. That’s a guy they like. They would have liked him two years ago, three years ago. Cincinnati was not trading him back then. I think Cincinnati would be very motivated to move him at some point this season because I think there he’s not gonna he’s not going to be on their team next season.”
