Maple Leafs Change Their Minds About Trade Options

The Toronto Maple Leafs have more clarity on their roster than they did a week ago. Easton Cowan is still with the team, but that could change on the drop of a dime. Matias Maccelli will get an opportunity on the top line with Auston Matthews, while youngster Nick Robertson treads water in the bottom six.

A new report claims that the Maple Leafs are no longer dangling Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok in the trade market. Additionally, another report makes the landscape appear much more murkier than that.

Robertson was drafted by the Maple Leafs 53rd overall in the 2019 draft. The 5-foot-9, 180 lb forward has spent his entire career in the Maple Leafs organization. He finished the 2024-25 season with 22 points in 69 games, while averaging 12 minutes a night.

Initially drafted 51st overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2010, the 34-year-old Jarnkrok finds himself in a depth role to begin this year. The 6-foot, 193 lb forward recorded seven points in 19 games last season, while averaging 13:14 in ice time.

Nick Robertson & Calle Jarnkrok: No Longer Trade Bait

The first report suggests that GM Brad Treliving does not want to dangle Robertson and Jarnkrok in a trade. While making an appearance on the First Up podcast, TSN insider Darren Dreger gave an update on the Maple Leafs’ trade plans.

“The information I had Saturday is that Treliving isn’t shopping Robertson or Calle Jarnkrok,” Dreger said to the hosts Carlo Colaiacovo and Aaron Korolnek on October 6. “He likes the idea of having that depth.”

One report from The Fourth Period contradicts this information.

“The Toronto Maple Leafs are once again dangling some of their depth forwards,” David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period wrote on September 30. “And (they) have spoken with some teams about the likes of Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and Nick Robertson, according to separate sources. All three players were shopped during the off-season, but Leafs GM Brad Treliving has not yet found an offer he has deemed acceptable.”

“The Leafs are believed to be looking for draft pick compensation in exchange for any of their available forwards.”

The Maple Leafs only have $21,324 in salary cap space, so moving a player for draft capital makes sense. However, given the time that elapsed between these reports, it’s reasonable to assume that things have changed.

Maple Leafs Still Looking for Forward Help

According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, the team is still looking to improve its forward depth.

“My understanding from talking to sources is Treliving continues to consider his options in terms of bringing in another forward,” Mirtle wrote on October 7. “That could be a trade, another waiver claim, or even a free-agent signing.”

“Berube clearly isn’t in love with some of his depth options, which has resulted in Kämpf’s being sent to the AHL,” Mirtle continues. “Others could be tossed overboard if the coach doesn’t like what he sees in these first few weeks without Laughton in the mix.”

This report leaves several options open. It doesn’t completely negate Dreger’s report, as the Maple Leafs could make a trade without David Kampf, Robertson, or Jarnkrok.

Another possibility is that each insider has a different source within the same organization. And, perhaps those sources have slightly different information.

Either way, there is never a dull moment for Maple Leafs fans.
