49ers’ Brock Purdy Gets Strong Words Amid Mac Jones Rise

Mac Jones earned his third win since joining the San Francisco 49ers, guiding the team to a 26-23 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5 at SoFi Stadium.

Jones was in control throughout the night, completing 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. With Brock Purdy out since the Week 1 win against the Seattle Seahawks, Jones has stepped in seamlessly, delivering three of San Francisco’s four wins so far this season.

Purdy returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the team suffered its only loss. With the emergence of Jones, it’s sparking discussions about a possible quarterback controversy for the 49ers.

One former player who has dealt with a quarterback controversy is Drew Bledsoe, as he lost his starting job to Tom Brady during his time with the New England Patriots. As a result, he offered advice to Purdy on how to handle the situation.

“Always keep in mind that even when things aren’t perfect, you’re still getting paid to play a game,” Bledsoe said during an October 9th appearance on 95.7 The Game. “So nobody gets to feel sorry for us, which it’s hard to have that perspective sometimes. And then beyond that, man, if you just handle yourself properly, then there will continue to be other opportunities.”

Mac Jones Sees Himself as the 49ers’ Backup

After the 49ers’ Week 5 win over the Rams, a reporter asked Jones in the postgame press conference whether he sees himself as the team’s starting quarterback moving forward.

“They brought me here to play as a backup,” Jones said (h/t KNBR). “That’s my job. Brock is the starter of this team. Right now he’s dealing with something, and for him to go out there last week and play, when you know he probably wasn’t at full health, he cares about this team.”

Moreover, Jones emphasized that Brock Purdy remains his starting quarterback, with him continuing as the backup, and shared more details on his approach for the rest of the 49ers’ season.

“I’ve been in [Purdy’s] position, I’ve been a starter and you want your backup to go in there and win because at the end of the season that could be the hit or miss between a playoff or not,“ Jones added.

Do the 49ers Have a QB Controversy?

Sports media host Jim Rome doesn’t buy into the idea of a quarterback controversy for the 49ers. He adds that San Francisco is actually in a strong position with their quarterbacks.

“It’s the opposite of a quarterback controversy,” Rome said on the October 3 edition of “The Jim Rome Show.”(…) This is not the way I see it. You know what that is? That’s not a quarterback controversy. What that is, is the opposite. It’s a great quarterback situation.

“What they have is a cheap, quality backup who they believe in, who’s a great fit for the system, who’s already won three games in a row. And he competes his ass off, he’s tough as hell, and his teammates respond to him. They love him, and they are Brock. So how is this a problem? It seems like the opposite of a problem to me.”
