SAN FRANCISCO – Plenty of laughs and smiles were shared when Steph Curry ran out of the Chase Center tunnel while wearing a No. 31 Seth Curry jersey, and younger brother Seth jogged onto the court wearing No. 30 on Thursday night’s open practice.
During his media availability on Friday afternoon, Steph Curry revealed that he wanted to take the bit even further.
“It was actually his idea in the tunnel, and I wanted him to run out when they introduced me,” Curry said.
For the first time since Seth was an undrafted rookie in 2013, the two brothers are participating in the same training camp.
The Warriors signed Curry’s brother the day after training camp began, and Seth Curry has yet to play in a game.
Aside from his stint in 2013, the brothers also played one year of high school basketball together at Charlotte Christian in North Carolina, Nowadays, Seth, 35, is an established NBA veteran who is winding down his career.
“I know how good he is, and how he approaches the game,” said Steph Curry.
Might fans see a game where the two brothers swap jersey numbers for a night? Don’t count on it.
“I’m sure (NBA commissioner) Adam Silver would love that,” Steph Curry deadpanned.
Butler status update
The Warriors will be without one of their top players in Los Angeles.
Jimmy Butler will be unavailable for the Warriors’ Sunday preseason game against the Lakers, coach Steve Kerr told media on Friday.
“He’s got a personal absence, so he will not play,” Kerr said, adding that the reason is not a negative one.
Kerr also mentioned the other three veterans – Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Al Horford – may also sit out the game in Southern California. Lakers superstar LeBron James will also be out with a nerve injury.
Kerr noted that his three vets will sit out Sunday’s game or the ensuing matchup in Portland on Tuesday.
Butler had missed a few days of practice last week with a tweaked ankle, but played against both the Lakers and Blazers at Chase Center, both Golden State wins.
According to both Kerr, and Butler’s best friend Buddy Hield, Butler was a dominant force in practice, which featured a physical scrimmage.
“He was good, he was good,” Hield said, “He looked really sharp, making jump shots and being physical.”
Curry agreed.
“It was a very impactful day across the board of getting to his spots with his competitive will,” Curry said. “Our practices have been at a very high level .. we’ve built up to a good session today, and from the jump, Jimmy was attacking the rim and dictating pace.”
Kerr on Spoelstra
Kerr expressed the utmost confidence in the man who is succeeding him as head coach of USA Basketball. Miami Heat coach Eric Spoelstra will follow Kerr as the man to lead the country’s national team. The Warriors’ coach stepped down after winning gold in Paris in 2024.
Now, his USA Basketball lead assistant is up next for the Los Angeles games in 2028
“Spo’s an incredible coach,” Kerr said. “I think the assistant coaching is almost a prerequisite, it’s really a different job, and now he has that experience … Spo is the perfect choice.”
