Rose Byrne Discusses the Big Risk Conan O’Brien Took on ‘Late Night’: VIDEO

Rose Byrne and Conan O'Brien

Rose Byrne can’t say enough good things about television host Conan O’Brien, who co-stars with her in the film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.” On a rare Friday night show, the “Platonic” star sat down with ‘Late Night’ host Seth Meyers and revealed what it was like to work alongside the beloved comedian. Find out what the actress had to say about the legendary comedian in the full interview below.

Byrne & O’Brien’s Newest Film is a Critical Success

Byrne stars in writer-director Mary Bronstein’s newest film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” as Linda, who attempts to navigate her child’s (Delaney Quinn) mysterious illness, her absent husband (Christian Slater), a missing person, and an increasingly hostile relationship with her therapist (O’Brien) as her life is crashing down around her.

Variety describes Byrne as “brilliantly unhinged” in this “chaotic maternal-meltdown drama” in their review of the film. In a Q&A of the film at the Sundance Film Festival, O’Brien said he was surprised Byrne didn’t check herself into a hospital after production.

There has been Oscar buzz surrounding the actress since it’s premiere earlier this year. In an exclusive interview with Den of Geek, Byrne is described to be, “extraordinarily bitter, funny, and exasperated as a woman at the end of her rope,” and O’Brien shines opposite her in “another remarkably unexpected performance.”

“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” was released by A24 on October 10, 2025. The film is in theaters now.

“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” Promotion

On O’Brien’s Instagram, he posted a video with director Bronstein promoting the film.

During the film’s promotion, Byrne and Bronstein also had the chance to visit the Criterion Closet to pick out their favorite films from the collection.

Byrne Gushes Over Her Comedian Co-Star

Byrne’s “Late Night” appearance was aired on Friday, October 10, to coincide with the film’s release. A new Friday release is unusual for the show, normally airing reruns on Friday nights. According to LateNighter, the show’s last new Friday episode aired in 2017.

During Byrne’s interview, she described the film as, “a study in tension and anxiety. But it’s very funny. It’s kind of extraordinary. And it’s really about a feeling.”

“You mentioned it’s really funny. We saw from the clip, that’s Conan O’Brien. By the way, in that clip, not being very funny. And it is, you know, obviously, you know, this is a legendary comedic performer. He is so good,” said Meyers.

“Isn’t he?” Byrne agreed, then proceeded to joke, “You’re next!” The actress continued on about O’Brien’s performance. “It’s not a stunt. Often you see, you know, it’s an unusual casting of a comedian, and it can be, like, an interloper, and he’s really not. He’s like, it’s a real performance. Nothing like Conan that we know, who is, like, lovely and warm and a caretaker and generous. And this character is very tense and has boundaries, and is a terrible therapist, by the way.”

“It’s interesting ’cause sometimes people will come on a show like mine and will say, like, you know, ‘how do you do this every night?’ And I’m always like, ‘oh, because I do it every night.’ Like it’s easier because, so it must have been a weird thing where you had more, you were in a weird case where Conan was the one who was newer to the process,” said Meyers.

“Yes, exactly,” Byrne replied. “And he was, it was a bigger risk for him in many ways. He doesn’t have to do this. Like, he’s a beloved, national treasure, who’s like, you know, you can’t walk four feet with Conan without people just throwing themselves at him.”

“He’s so recognizable,” said Meyers.

“He’s so, like, extraordinarily recognizable with the hair, and the height, and the whole thing,” stated Byrne. “But he’s very, he really took a risk, and he worked so hard. He worked so hard at it. And he was a great scene partner. And, like, really spontaneous and really fun.”
