Yankees Predicted to Re-Sign Pitcher Who Struggled in Postseason on 3-Year Deal

The New York Yankees have once again crashed and burned in the playoffs, as they were eliminated in four games by the Toronto Blue Jays in their 2025 ALDS matchup. It’s back to the drawing board for the Yankees, and they face several big questions about their future that will need to be answered over the coming months.

Entering free agency, the Yanks have a handful of key players who could end up hitting the open market. One of those players is relief pitcher Luke Weaver, and while he is fresh off an ugly postseason that saw him struggle, the team has been predicted to re-sign him in an effort to keep the backend of their bullpen in good shape.

Yankees Predicted to Hand Luke Weaver a Three-Year Contract

During New York’s run to the World Series in 2024, Weaver was a revelation out of the back of their bullpen. He eventually became the team’s closer, posting a 1.76 ERA with 16 strikeouts and four saves in his 12 appearances for the Yanks in the postseason. And in the blink of an eye, Weaver ended up becoming a critical piece for the team moving forward.

Weaver was solid in 2025 (4-4, 3.62 ERA, 8 SV, 72 K, 1.02 WHIP), but he struggled in the second half of the season after he returned from a hamstring strain. In his three playoff appearances this time around, Weaver was abysmal, as he got just one total out, while giving up five earned runs in the process. For those keeping track at home, that’s good for an incomprehensible 135.00 ERA.

It appeared as if Weaver was tipping his pitches in the playoffs, but even then, it’s fair to wonder if the goodwill he’s built up with the team over the past year or so has already disappeared. With free agency on the horizon, Weaver’s time with the Yankees could already be over, but he was recently predicted to re-sign with the team on a three-year deal this offseason.

“Weaver’s first two postseason outings this year were atrocious, five runs over no innings, but he’s been the biggest bargain reliever in baseball for two years,” Randy Miller wrote for NJ.com. “Weaver wasn’t right in the second half, and he was tipping pitches in the playoffs, but he’s proved over a long enough sample size that he can pitch in New York. Prediction: Re-signs with Yankees for three years.”

Should the Yankees Re-Sign Luke Weaver?

Throughout the year, the Yankees’ bullpen was their biggest weakness, and despite their efforts to shore it up at the trade deadline, it ultimately proved to be too little, too late. Weaver was expected to be a key part of this group in the postseason, but he was so bad during his limited time on the mound that manager Aaron Boone quickly cast him aside.

Weaver’s injury obviously had an impact on his season, and while he was fully healthy for the playoffs, he was borderline unplayable. Tipping pitches will do that to a pitcher, but when he’s on, Weaver has proven himself to be a lights-out late-inning reliever. New York needs bullpen help, and losing Weaver would only exacerbate that issue, which is why bringing him back to town would make a lot of sense for the team.
