Every NFL season is going to have its challenges — for the Washington Commanders those challenges are only becoming more amplified because of how talented they could be if everyone finally gets on the same page.
The Commanders got their latest challenge in the form of having both NFL All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin and veteran wide receiver Noah Brown out for a Week 6 Monday Night Football showdown against the Chicago Bears.
Brown famously caught the “Hail Maryland” touchdown pass to beat the Bears in Week 8 of the 2024 regular season — a moment Bears fans actually refer to as the “Fail Mary” game.
“Commanders HC Dan Quinn said WR Terry McLaurin and WR Noah Brown will be OUT this week,” The Washington Post’s Tashan Reed wrote on his official X account on October 11.
McLaurin Will Miss Third Consecutive Game
McLaurin is set to miss his third consecutive game with a quad injury that might actually be more of a hip flexor injury. He also spent the first week consulting with doctors to see if he might need surgery.
“For the Washington Commanders it does not seem like they’re going to have the service of one of their top wide receivers,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Thursday, October 9. “Terry McLaurin, who has been battling a hip flexor injury, officially called a quad but more like a hip flexor, was not at practice (Wednesday) for the Commanders again and because he missed last week it does not bode well for his status. You would think to play in the game he would have to have a full practice to play and he hasn’t even had a limited practice yet.”
McLaurin did some light work at Thursday’s practice, where he warmed up with his teammates then did individual work with trainers.
Before this season, McLaurin had a well earned reputation for not only being one of the NFL’s elite wide receivers but one of its most durable stars.
In his first 6 seasons, McLaurin only missed 3 regular season games, total, and saw his streak of 71 consecutive regular-season starts ended when he missed the Commanders’ Week 4 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
He’s also had 5 consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards dating back to 2020 — and he had over 900 receiving yards as a rookie in 2019.
Brown’s Status Changed Throughout Week
Brown originally seemed on track to play against the Bears but will miss a fourth consecutive game since he hurt his groin in a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
The Commanders brought Brown back for 2025 on a 1-year, $3.25 million contract.
“He’s doing well, he’s getting closer,” Quinn told the media on Wednesday. “Having the extra day off this week helps, but we’ll see where the rest of the week takes us.”
Brown brought his career back to life last season in Washington, where he wasn’t even on the roster until the Commanders picked him up 1 day after he was released by the Houston Texans as part of their final roster cuts on August 27.
In just 11 games in 2024, Brown had 35 receptions for 453 yards and one touchdown.
