The Cleveland Browns have announced a roster move ahead of their Week 6 clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Browns have elevated cornerback Tre Avery from the practice squad for the AFC North clash. Avery is in his fourth NFL season out of Rutgers. Originally signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2022, Avery has appeared in 40 career games with Tennessee and Cleveland.
The Browns needed to add some additional depth at cornerback following the trade of Greg Newsome. Cleveland sent Newsome to the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.
It’s been a busy week for the Browns at cornerback. Cleveland signed defensive back Dom Jones to the active roster from the practice squad and added Dee Williams to the practice squad, continuing to shuffle depth in the secondary.
Browns to Start Tyson Campbell Against Steelers
The Browns will start Tyson Campbell opposite of Denzel Ward against the Steelers. Campbell came over in the Newsome trade. He has just a few days of practice under his belt but feels ready.
“I think just having awareness of the situation you’re in and trying to fix whatever it is that can help the team win games,” Campbell said. “Whether it be our practice habits or our communication. So just trying to hone in on those and try to be helpful as that as I possibly can.”
The Browns liked Newsome but feel like Campbell — who is signed through the 2028 season — will be a very good fit for their stingy defense.
“I’d have to say, he probably wasn’t a great fit for (the Jaguars) scheme change,” Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said on Thursday. “And he’s probably a little bit more of a scheme fit for us. He’s a good press cover guy, challenges guys on the outside part of the field. Anytime you get a change in a head coach, defensive coordinator, GM, sometimes decisions and things that they liked about a player’s skill set in a previous regime might not fit. And I think it was that opportunity here.”
Ex-Browns CB Greg Newsome Surprised by Trade
The trade caught Newsome off guard. The former first-round pick had started the first five games and was performing well. After spending recent seasons primarily as the team’s nickelback, a season-ending injury to Martin Emerson Jr. opened the door for Newsome to reclaim a starting role on the outside.
“The biggest thing is just the guys,” Newsome said of the trade. “I’ve been with some of these guys my entire career, especially a guy like Denzel Ward. That’s my brother for life. So not to be out there on the field with him is definitely going to be hard, but it is just like this is what God had for me.
“So I’m super excited to be here, be with this defense [that is] No. 1 in takeaways right now.”
Newsome’s first taste of action with the Jaguars will come at home against the Seattle Seahawks. Cleveland is heading to Pittsburgh for a AFC North clash with the Steelers.
