Colts Make Decision on Veteran Running Back Ahead of Cardinals Game

The Indianapolis Colts are entering Week 6 of the 2025 NFL campaign looking to continue their extremely hot start to the new season, and they will have a very good chance to do so, as they will be facing an Arizona Cardinals team that is expected to be without starting quarterback Kyler Murray. As a result, it looks like the team will be turning to former Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett under center.

On the other side of the coin, the Colts are dealing with their fair share of injuries as well. One of them resulted in the team making an intriguing roster move involving veteran running back Ameer Abdullah for the second straight week, as the team looks to shore up its depth on the offensive side of the ball.

Colts Elevate Ameer Abdullah from Practice Squad to Active Roster

A big reason for the Colts’ red-hot start to the season has been the resurgent play of star running back Jonathan Taylor. Through five games, Taylor has racked up 480 yards and six touchdowns on 94 carries, while also catching 16 passes for 133 yards and another score. Simply put, he’s been the best running back in the league to this point.

If something happens to him, though, the team needs to be prepared. However, one of their depth options, Tyler Goodson, is dealing with a groin injury that will hold him out of his third straight game. While DJ Giddens is also at the team’s disposal, having a third option doesn’t hurt, which is where the veteran Abdullah comes into play.

Through his 11-year career, Abdullah has turned himself into a valuable third-down, change-of-pace running back. While he may not be as effective as he once was, he can be used to give Taylor a break from time to time, especially in passing situations. With Goodson out again, Abdullah got elevated from the team’s practice squad to their active roster ahead of their upcoming action.

“We have elevated RB Ameer Abdullah and CB Cameron Mitchell to the active roster from the practice squad for AZ vs. IND,” the team announced in a post on X.

With Taylor leading the way on the ground and Daniel Jones experiencing a renaissance season with his new squad, Indianapolis has been dominating its opponents through five games. While some folks have been waiting for them to come back down to earth, the team continues to defy expectations on a weekly basis, and it appears they may very well be here to stay this season.

Even before Murray’s aforementioned injury, the Cardinals were heading in the wrong direction, as they have lost their past three games after starting the season off 2-0. Taking down the Colts was already a tall task, but doing so without Murray is going to be all the more difficult. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and if all goes according to plan, Indy will earn its fifth win of the year on Sunday.
