It has been a decade since Ryan Reynoldsâ father, James Reynolds, died. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 74. The âDeadpoolâ actorâs grief has not gone away. He recently opened up about his feelings in an honest interview that brings awareness to male vulnerability.
Ryan Reynolds Shares His Grief

Reynoldsâ father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1988. At the time, he was 57. “The grief thing is odd. I find it hits you at weird times. When my father passed away, we had a complicated relationship,” the actor said at an event for the release of the documentary, âJohn Candy: I Like Me,â People reports. Reynolds produced the film.Â
Reynolds continued, “There’s an episode with Jimmy Fallon that exists where you’ll see me lose my train of thought. I’m in the middle of a story,â he shared, revealing that his grief hit him like a âfreight trainâ at one point. This happened despite his dad having been dead for several years.
The actor reflected on this moment, noting how he was able to recover quickly and continue with his interview on the late-night talk show. “Most people would never notice it, but grief is one of those things that just finds you at the weirdest moments,” he said.Â
Fans Share Their Experience With Grief
A photo of Reynolds and a brief comment about his remarks at the event was posted on Instagram by People on Sunday, October 12. The post allowed fans to react to the news.Â
âGrief certainly can come like a freight train,â a fan shared of their own experience. âHeâs right it does and it also changes you in ways you didnât expect,â another person wrote.
âFour years ago I lost my father and I also had a complicated relationship, and that grief was the worst time of my life. Now I know that everything happens for a reason, and I’m calm,â a third person shared.Â
This is not the first time Reynolds has spoken about his father. In August 2024, he discussed their complicated relationship in an interview with People. “I think most men and boys have a slightly complicated relationship with their father, but I also think that the healing for me or the closure around my dad actually really comes more through my relationship with my own kids,â he told People.Â
