Diane Keaton and Al Pacino met while filming the 1972 classic âThe Godfather.â He played Michael Corleone. She was Kay Adams-Corleone, his on-screen wife. What started as cinematic chemistry soon turned into a real romance that captivated Hollywood. They began dating in 1971 and spent more than a decade in an on-and-off relationship defined by passion, respect, and creative connection.
But Keaton wanted something lasting. When Pacino never proposed, she made the painful choice to walk away in 1987.

In interviews over the years, Keaton often described Pacino as the great love of her life, while friends now say the feeling was mutual.
‘She Was the Love of His Life’
Following Keatonâs passing on October 11 at age 79, a close friend of Pacinoâs revealed to the Daily Mail that the actor had been deeply affected by her death.
âLooking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane, who heâs always called âan amazing woman,ââ the source said. âI know he will forever regret he didnât make his move when he had the chance.â
The insider added, âFor years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, âIf itâs meant to be, itâs never too late for a do-over.â But sadly, now it is.â
A Love That Never Faded, Even in Distance
Though they both lived in Beverly Hills for years, Pacino and Keaton reportedly hadnât spoken in a long time before her death.
âThough he and Diane both lived only a few miles from each other for years, they never spoke,â the source explained. âI once asked him why, and he told me, âThereâs no need to talk with each other. We said everything that needed to be said at the time.â

Despite the silence between them, those close to Pacino say his affection for Keaton never truly faded.
Now 85, Pacino remains one of Hollywoodâs most celebrated stars. Though he has dated many women and raised three children, marriage was something he never pursued.
Keaton also followed her own path, embracing independence while raising her two adopted children, Dexter and Duke, with love and quiet strength.
Their story, filled with romance, respect, and reflection, became one of Hollywoodâs most timeless connections. It was a love that shaped them both, even long after it ended. âShe was his equal in every way,â a close friend shared. âAnd he knew it.â
