Diane Keaton died in California on Saturday, October 11. She was 79. The news of her passing has been met with great sadness, and many are mourning the loss of someone so talented and beautiful.Â
Keaton is survived by her two adopted children, daughter Dexter and son Duke. But she also leaves behind a golden retriever, Reggie. Her beloved pet meant so much to her and had an incredible impact on her life.Â
What Diane Keatonâs Dog Meant to Her
From the outside looking in, Keaton appeared to live a glamorous life when she attended prestigious events. However, a friend told People that âthe spotlight wasnât importantâ to her. Instead, she loved her home and her dog.Â
âShe lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved,â the unnamed friend said, People reports.
Keaton made no secret of her love for her dog. âI love to walk with my dog. These are the things I love,” she said in a chat with Interview magazine in 2021. “And I really do love nature … I really enjoy seeing. I guess my favorite thing in life is the fact that I can see. Itâs just so unbelievable.âÂ
Perhaps the question from Sarah Paulson for Interview magazine about what Keaton would save if her house were on fire and she could only save one thing best sums up her love for her pet. Her response was simple:Â âMy dog Reggie,â she said.
She Loved Dogs
In a May 2023Â interview with journalist Catherine Shoard for The Guardian, Keaton discussed her love for Reggie again. The publication describes her as âa shaggy-haired rescue retriever.”
Keaton said that her beloved pet preferred her over her housekeeper. âShe is besotted. When sheâs there, I get less, right, Reggie? Reggie is just a spoiled brat, and she treats me wrong, donât you, Reggie? No, sheâs great,” she said. “I love dogs. And I love animals. Do you have a dog? No? Maybe I could get you one.â
The “Annie Hall” star also joked about firing her housekeeper to maintain her beloved petâs attention. âOh yeah. Iâd like to get rid of her. No, of course not! Sheâs great. I need her. Itâs fine,â she said. âDonât feel sorry for me. I love it. Itâs all interesting. Itâs never dull, ever, life.â
The Changes in Diane Keatonâs Life
Reggie was in Keatonâs last Instagram post, from April 2025, and she was a regular feature on the social media platform. But Keaton’s declining health happened rapidly and out of the public eye.
“She lived in Brentwood for many years,” a source said of the changes in Keatonâs life before her passing, People reports. “She loved her neighborhood. Up until just a few months ago, she’d walk her dog every day. She was usually dressed the same, with a hat and her signature sunglasses, regardless of the weather.”
The same source also gave insight into Keatonâs interactions with Reggie. “She was always very nice, funny, and chatty. She’d talk to her dog like he was a person. She was eccentric and had this old-school Hollywood aura,â they said. âShe was very, very special.”Â
