The Seattle Mariners finished game 2 of the ALCS on top yet again. Fighting off the Toronto Blue Jays, they were able to secure the win on the road. They now lead the series 2-0.
After defeating the Blue Jays 3-1 in game 1, the Mariners returned with a triumphant 10-3 lead. Game 3 will will bring the Mariners back home to Seattle, where they will face off again in pursuit of the series win.
Game 2
ALCS game 2 got off to a quick start this Monday, October 13th. The Mariners kicked off the game with a 3-0 lead. Julio Rodriguez sent a homer left, allowing himself, Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh to score.
From here, the Blue Jays were able to tie during the first and second inning. The game remained stagnant for the 3rd and 4th inning. Things picked up again during the 5th inning. After an odd play where Arozarena made it to second base, but Eugenio Suarez took a ball to the back while watching from the dugout, the Blue Jays gave Cal Raleigh an intentional walk. Jorge Polanco sent the 2 base players and himself across home plate with a home run hit. Polanco’s hit upped the score 6-3. Polanco has been a key player for the Mariners during their postseason run, and driven 5 of the 9 runs during the Mariners postseason play.
The Mariners were able to hold off the Blue Jays, and in the 6th inning Mitch Garver hit a triple. Using pinch-runner Leo Rivas, the Mariners added another run with a score of 7-3.
At the top of the 7th inning Polanco made a base hit, followed by Josh Naylor who sent a homer right, and moved the score once again, 9-3. Naylor has also been pivotal to the Mariners success. Emerging as in impressive base stealer, Naylor was already known for great offensive play and big hits. The first-baseman took a ball to the leg early in the game but powered through the pain to assist with the win.
After Naylor’s home run hit, the bases were loaded by Eugenio Suarez, Rivas, and Polanco. Suarez was able to make it home off a sacrifice fly from J.P. Crawford, and Arozarena had the third out to end the scoring at 10-3 for Seattle.
The Mariners had a quick turn around in the 8th inning, but Pitcher Emerson Hancock was able to turn it back around just as fast. The rest of the game was pretty uneventful, and despite a crowd of Blue Jay fans trying plenty of superstitions to turn the game back in their favor, the Mariners won with a final score of 10-3.
Other Mariners Updates
Bryan Woo, who is back on the roster for the ALCS, has yet to make an appearance. The right-handed pitcher has been recovering from pectoral inflammation. Woo is not expected to play until closer to the end of the series.
Manager Dan Wilson commented on his progress, stating, “He’s at a point where he’s feeling a lot better, and we’re hoping that as we get into this series, we’ll get a chance to see him later.”
Game 3 will take place in Seattle on Wednesday October 15th at 5:08 p.m. Fans can watch as the Mariners continue to compete in hopes of their first ever World Series appearance.
