L.A. man convicted of murder in 2019 downtown Riverside shooting

A Riverside County jury on Tuesday, Oct. 14, convicted a 28-year-old Los Angeles man of murder in a 2019 shooting in Riverside’s downtown entertainment district.

Jurors on Tuesday also found true a sentencing enhancement that Bowman used a firearm that caused great bodily injury, but rejected a special-circumstances allegation that Bowman was a gang member at the time of the crime. On Wednesday, jurors continued deliberating and found true an enhancement that Bowman committed the shooting to benefit a criminal street gang.

The firearm enhancement could add 25 years to life in prison to Bowman’s sentence, and the gang enhancement could add 10 years.

Sentencing was set for Nov. 21 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

Manuel Mukes, 23, of New Orleans, was gunned down near Orange Street and Mission Inn Avenue just after 2 a.m. on Aug. 18, 2019, as the neighborhood’s bars, restaurants and nightclubs were closing.

Mukes died hours later at a hospital.
