The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to go on the road to play the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night, which veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn’t happy about.
Rodgers and the Steelers are coming off a 23-9 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Just four days later, Pittsburgh will travel to Cincinnati, which Rodgers isn’t happy about.
Instead, Rodgers made his feelings clear about Thursday Night Football and claims it’s just about making the NFL money and not looking out for players’ safety.
“Thursday’s all about the league making money,” Rodgers said to reporters on Tuesday. “We understand that. Used to be Thanksgiving Thursdays, then they added the Thursday game. You know, then Amazon coming in with a nice chunk of change. We know what it’s all about. But it’s the same. Everybody’s got at least one of them, so we just have to suck it up. We go on the road and take care of business, we get a break.”
Rodgers is far from the first player to complain about the NFL having Thursday Night Football games. But it’s a clear stance from the future Hall of Famer, who isn’t pleased to be playing another game four days later.
The Steelers are 5.5-point favorites to defeat the Bengals on Thursday.
Rodgers Blasts ‘Unplayable’ Steelers Field
This is not the first complaint of Rodgers this week, as the veteran quarterback was also frustarted with the Steelers field.
During Pittsburgh’s win over the Browns, the field appeared to be in poor condition, as the grass was not in good shape. Several players were slipping and falling, and Rodgers wasn’t pleased.
“Thankfully (Boswell) took care of those kicks before the field got borderline unplayable,” Rodgers said. “I just felt like it got real beat up. By the time the third quarter rolled around, that thing was really beat up, so I feel bad about what happened to Miles (Killebrew). I’m not sure if, you know, there was any carry there. I know the field gets a lot of play…
“It reminds me a little bit of the field in Green Bay in the early years, but not until, like, November or early December where it would get kind of torn up a little bit,” Rodgers added. “Then they went out and found an incredible, you know, field maintenance guy that would come over and help our guys out, and the field in Green Bay is absolutely immaculate, but the field today got pretty torn up.”
Despite the poor field conditions, Rodgers had success against the Browns. He went 21-for-30 for 235 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Rodgers Excited to Play Against Joe Flacco
Although Rodgers isn’t pleased about playing on Thursday, he is excited to face Joe Flacco.
Rodgers and Flacco are both in their 40s, and the Steelers quarterback is excited for the matchup. He believes it’s also good for the old guys in sports.
“I think it’s great for all the old guys,” Rodgers said on Tuesday. “When I watch other sports, maybe it’s because I’m the older guy, I tend to pull for the older guys to win championships…
“I’ve known Joe for a long time,” Rodgers added. “He’s been great coming to my charity event. He’s been a great ambassador for the league, he’s had a great career. And it’s fun that we’re both still playing.”
The Steelers are off to a 4-1 start and atop the AFC North.
