Kyler Murray’s Latest Injury Update Hints at Cardinals’ Week 7 QB Plan

The Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a free fall heading into Week 7. After winning their first two games of the season, the Cardinals have now lost their last four contests, dropping their record to 2-4. Making matters even worse, star quarterback Kyler Murray is dealing with a foot injury that has thrown his status for the team’s upcoming contest up in the air.

Murray was forced to miss the team’s Week 6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts with his aforementioned injury, which forced veteran backup Jacoby Brissett into action. With Sunday quickly drawing near, the latest injury update on Murray appears to indicate what the team is planning on doing at quarterback the next time they take the field.

Kyler Murray Trending Towards Not Playing in Week 7

At his best, Murray is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL. And yet, even with a collection of talent around him on offense, the Cardinals have struggled to consistently move the ball over the past few seasons. In his first five games of the 2025 campaign, Murray has once again looked uncomfortable in Arizona’s offensive scheme.

In Week 6, Brissett filled in for Murray and nearly led the team to an upset victory over the Colts. In just one game, Brissett threw for 320 yards and a pair of scores. For reference, Murray hasn’t thrown for more than 220 yards in any of his five games for Arizona this season. While he adds an element as a runner, it was telling that the offense looked better with Brissett under center.

Still, the team obviously would rather have Murray under center than Brissett, but it appears that may not be in the cards for Week 7. On Thursday, Murray was seen throwing to the Cardinals’ practice squad players, while Brissett was running with the team’s starters. As a result, that seems to indicate Brissett is in line to earn his second straight start on Sunday.

“During open part of Cardinals practice Kyler Murray working but with PS pass catchers. Brissett and Slovis with regular pass catchers. Murray looks OK throwing, however,” Darren Urban of the team’s official website shared in a post on X.

Without Murray, the Cardinals’ offense becomes a bit more predictable, but that didn’t matter too much in Week 6 against the Colts. Brissett doesn’t exactly have a track record of being a consistent producer on a weekly basis, but there’s a chance that Arizona has a better shot of winning with him under center than Murray in Week 7.

Murray still has a shot to get himself healthy for this game, but with just one practice left on the schedule for Friday, his odds of suiting up appear to be low. It will be worth checking in on his official status before kickoff, but as of right now, it looks like Brissett is trending towards starting against the Green Bay Packers in Week 7. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
