The Dallas Cowboys season has not been what the team had hoped or expected after the first six weeks. Hoping to rebound from a 7-10 season in which they missed the playoffs for the first time in four years, the Cowboys got off to a strange and disappointing start even before the season-opening kickoff, when they traded their four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers rather than extend his contract.
Then they dropped their opener to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and since, the Cowboys have tied one game, and suffered losses to the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears on their way to a 2-3-1 start.
Things only got weirder and more frustrating for the Cowboys on Friday, when two-time Pro Bowl â and 2021 first-team All-Pro â cornerback Trevon Diggs somehow suffered a concussion on Thursday night at his home, and had to be ruled out of Sunday’s nationally televised divisional rivalry clash with the Washington Commanders.
Diggs Concussion a Mystery
As Heavy.com writer Tony Adame noted, “in health terms, Diggs seemed to be cruising along this season â heâs played in all 6 games for the 2-3-1 Cowboys. Thatâs notable only because Diggsâ career over the last three years has been defined by injuries as heâs missed 32 regular season games since 2022 with a variety of injuries.”
But how did Diggs manage to get a concussion so severe that he is forced to miss a crucial home game?
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said that he did not know what caused the “accident” that resulted in the concussion, but with so little information available, even calling whatever happened an “accident” seems to involve some possibly unwarranted assumptions.
First Clue Emerges on Cause of Concussion
Asked if the 27-year-old younger brother of New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs had suffered a fall in his home that caused the head injury, Schottenheimer said “he did not have any more information,” according to KDFW Fox 4 TV News in Dallas.
But one clue as to what may have happened, or more precisely, what did not happen, emerged later on Friday, in a report posted to social media by Emmy-award winning journalist and longtime senior NFL insider Josina Anderson.
According to Anderson’s post early Friday afternoon, “My understanding is Trevon Diggsâ home concussion did not result from a dispute, Iâm told.”
If Anderson is accurate, her information would appear to rule out any type of physical altercation or domestic violence incident.
Diggs ‘Seems’ to be Okay, Coach Says
Beyond that, the cause of Diggs concussion remains a mystery. Schottenheimer told KDFW that the team was in the process of “gathering information” on the incident. Diggs himself had not yet commented as of Friday evening. But the coach did say that the cornerback appeared to be “okay.”
âItâs part of the business. Itâs unfortunate,â Schottenheimer said, as quoted by the Associated Press. âThis is the NFL. If youâre unsure whatâs going to happen, just wait because something is going to happen. You deal with it. The biggest thing is just the concern for Trevon and is he okay. And it seems like he is.â
Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones â son of owner Jerry Jones â said that he had “no comment” on the Diggs situation that will cause the cornerback to miss the Week Seven game, according to Dallas Morning News reporter Calvin Watkins.
