49ers Add Veteran Wide Receiver to Growing Injured Reserve List

The story of the 2025 campaign so far for the San Francisco 49ers has been injuries. Whereas the injury bug destroyed the 49ers last season, the team has managed to battle through adversity to this point, posting a 4-2 record through six games. However, they need to start getting some players back if they want to keep their season alive.

While several players are set to return from injury for Week 7, San Fran is still watching its players drop like flies on a near-daily basis. The latest player to fall victim to the injury bug is veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, which led the team to make a move involving him on Friday afternoon.

49ers Place Marquez Valdes-Scantling on Injured Reserve

After a solid finish to the 2024 campaign with the New Orleans Saints, Valdes-Scantling signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks over the offseason. He didn’t end up making the team’s active roster, leading him to sign with the Niners’ practice squad ahead of the start of the season.

With Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, and Jacob Cowing all missing time to start the season, that forced Valdes-Scantling into action unexpectedly. He has suited up for five games so far this season, catching four passes for 40 yards. While those aren’t gaudy numbers, obviously, it’s been huge having him available, given all the other absences this team has dealt with.

The problem is that now Valdes-Scantling is injured, which has made things even more complicated for the 49ers. The two-time Super Bowl champion has been dealing with a calf injury throughout the week, and with things not progressing the way the team would have liked, they opted to place Valdes-Scantling on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least the team’s next four games.

“The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have placed WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the Injured Reserve list,” the team shared on its official website.

Losing Valdes-Scantling is another blow to the Niners’ wide receiver depth, but the good news is that the team has several other players getting healthy. Tight end George Kittle is set to return to action in Week 7, and while Jennings is playing through several injuries, he’s not on the injury report ahead of the team’s upcoming contest. Furthermore, all reports indicate Aiyuk, who hasn’t played this season, is making progress behind the scenes, too.

As has been the case all season long, it’s all hands on deck for San Francisco heading into its upcoming contest against the Atlanta Falcons, who are fresh off a statement victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. The 49ers are going to need to play much better than they did against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week if they intend to come out on top, and all eyes will be on them, as this game is set to get underway at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday Night Football.
