The Golden State Warriors have waived Seth Curry, the younger brother of superstar Stephen Curry, just days before their season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced Saturday.
Seth, who joined Golden State on a non-guaranteed contract, participated throughout training camp but did not see action in the preseason. His release, however, is viewed as a strategic salary-cap move rather than the end of his time with the franchise.
According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, the Warriors — currently hard-capped at the second apron — are expected to re-sign Curry later this season on a pro-rated veteran minimum contract. The move would allow the team to preserve flexibility and remain under the tax apron line.
NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin added that the Warriors could bring Curry back as soon as November 15, though a December timeline “would give them more cushion against the tax apron.”
Kerr: ‘The Timing Feels Right’ for the Curry Brothers
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr praised the organization’s decision to bring Seth into the fold during training camp, calling it a “long overdue moment” for the Curry family and for fans who’ve waited years to see the brothers together in Golden State.
“I think it’s awesome,” Kerr said earlier in the training camp. “The timing feels right on this. I don’t know if the timing was right over recent years — we probably didn’t have playing time for him. He was in a place where he was going to teams and playing a lot, making money. And it just feels like they’re both at a point in their careers where this makes a ton of sense. I’m thrilled to have Seth and to see the two brothers side by side today at our meeting. It was pretty awesome.”
Kerr and the Warriors’ front office have long admired Seth’s professionalism, perimeter shooting, and adaptability — traits that fit seamlessly into the Warriors’ ball movement-heavy system.
Seth: ‘It’s Definitely Special to Be Here’
For Seth, joining his brother’s team — even briefly — was a dream more than a decade in the making.
“It’s definitely special,” Seth said after signing. “Feels like a good time in both of our careers for me to be here. It’s funny — Kerr, Steve, and Mike asked me a few times over the years if I’d ever want to team up with Steph. I know I’ve said before that I didn’t want to be on the same team, that I wanted to create my own path, but it’s good to be here now at this stage.”
He added that he’s eager to contribute to the Warriors’ veteran core and championship pursuit.
“This is a veteran team, and we’re trying to get back to winning games and chasing a championship,” Seth said. “I’ve always felt like the Bay showed me a lot of love — like it was one of my homes, especially with Steph being here so long.”
Stephen Curry: ‘He Knows How to Get It Done’
Stephen Curry said having his brother in camp — even temporarily — has been a “special” experience for both.
“I know how he approaches the game,” Steph said. “I know how good he is. He knows how to pick and choose his spots depending on his role and always finds a way to get it done. It’s cool to practice against him and see what I’ve known for the last decade — how he works, how he carries himself. And he gets to hang out with his nieces and nephews a little more, too, which is cool.”
Seth Curry’s Veteran Presence and Shooting Still Valued
Seth, 34, is coming off a career-best shooting season with the Charlotte Hornets, where he hit 45.6% from three-point range, narrowly topping Stephen Curry’s single-season high of 45.5% set in 2011–12.
While he played limited minutes (15.6 per game), Seth’s elite efficiency and experience remain attractive to the Warriors’ coaching staff, particularly for stabilizing the second unit when Stephen rests.
“I’ve probably watched 95% of Warriors games over the last 16 years,” Seth said. “I know their style and how they play. I just need to learn the terminology they use, and once I do, I’ll fit right in whenever they need me.”
Golden State’s Plan: Patience Now, Reunion Later
For now, Seth Curry will wait for the Warriors to make the financial space needed to re-sign him. But few doubt he’ll be back in uniform soon — this time, finally as a teammate to his brother.
Once Golden State reopens that roster spot, the NBA could see one of its most heartwarming storylines realized: Stephen and Seth Curry sharing the floor together in the pursuit of another Warriors championship.
