‘Korn’ Guitarist Remembers Past Collaborator & Friend

James Shaffer, also known as “Munky,” commented beneath an Instagram post made by TMZ mourning the loss of Rivers.

Munky commented, “💔😔🕯️.”

Korn and Limp Bizkit share a long and complicated history together. As journalist Anthony Spencer for The Things explains in an article about the bands’ on-again-off-again feud, “In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the music scene underwent a seismic shift, giving birth to a genre that would become the angst-ridden anthem of a generation – nu-metal. Among the torchbearers of this movement were two iconic bands: Korn and Limp Bizkit.” Spencer goes on to state, “These bands were peers, but as we’ve seen with other popular groups, they couldn’t play nice and just enjoy their respective success.”

Tensions began to rise after a collaboration between the two bands.

“Fred was at the studio one day after a Korn-TV taping, and we said, ‘Let’s do a song together. Hey, man, let’s go back and forth and rip on each other like an old-school battle.’ I don’t know who’s idea it was. I can’t remember if it was mine, or Fieldy’s, or Fred’s, but we came up with the idea and we started writing and we worked on it together. I even came up with some bags on myself for Fred to say. It was all in good-natured fun,” said Korn singer, Jonathan Davis. But unfortunately, egos got involved.

Luckily, the bands eventually managed to put this behind them and go on tour together.

Munky, when speaking with Louder Sound, opened up about the issues between their bands.

“When you’re young, egos tend to play such a big part. It’s just that time in your life and now we’re all grown up, we’ve all got kids and we just want to have fun. I think we can put all of that stuff from the past to one side and we can all laugh about it.”

“I think everybody is excited for the tour and we can all sit in a room together now and we’ll talk about all of the crazy times that we had and all of the stupid stuff we did and said. I know I can. We’ve been on tours and festivals with each other through Europe in the last few years and we’ve ran into those guys and it’s all good. There’s never been any, ‘Oh man. I don’t want to see that guy,’ or anything like that,” he said.

Munky continued on about how excited he was to tour together.

“I’m going to speak for myself, I am super excited to tour the UK with those guys. They are amazing musicians, they’re very talented and cool guys. I have nothing but great memories with them. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Seye Adelekan, the bassist from Gorillaz, posted a comment lamenting the recent loss of multiple musical icons. Under an Instagram post made by IGN, Adelekan shared his thoughts.

The bassist responded, “Wtf, this week man 🥺.”

This comment follows the tragic passing of R&B icon D’Angelo on October 14 and founding KISS guitarist Ace Frehley on October 16.

Gorillaz and Limp Bizkit were set to headline “Rock For People” festival in 2026 along with Iron Maiden and Bring Me The Horizon. Rivers’ last post on Instagram featured this festival lineup with the caption, featuring The Cars’ song “Good Times Roll.” Rivers captioned the post, “nothing but love.”
