Police shoot ‘knifeman in the chest’ in Nottinghamshire village standoff

A man is in hospital with serious chest injuries after being shot by a police officer.

Armed police marksmen were deployed to the ‘firearm related incident’ at around 12.10am on Monday.

Bodycam footage shows the 56-year-old man was armed with a knife, according to Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

The police watchdog verified that one officer fired a single shot and the man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

The 56-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition after the shooting in Wellow Road in the village of Ollerton.

Police have arrested both the man and another 32-year-old man on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause violence.

The cordon mainly appears to cover the length of a caravan park in the area, with a police vehicle also present at the entrance to that caravan park further down Wellow Road.

There is then a police cordon at Wellow Road’s junction with Newark Road and another further down Newark Road, just after its junction with Kelsey Avenue.

A man who lives near the Kesley Avenue cordon, who wished only to be known as ‘Johnny B’, said: ‘It’s a bit scary.

‘Usually this is a fairly quiet area, but it obviously had to be something serious if the police have been here for so long.

‘It’s to be expected now unfortunately, nowhere is safe.’

Chief Constable Steve Cooper previously said: ‘I know this news will be concerning for the community in Ollerton and the wider public in Nottinghamshire.

‘However, I want to reassure you, incidents where officers discharge their firearms are incredibly rare.

‘It is right that there is a full investigation into the circumstances around this incident, and a mandatory referral has now been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

‘This process must take its course and while that is ongoing it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.’

The police watchdog has now launched an investigation.

IOPC regional director Emily Barry, said: ‘Police shootings still remain rare but when they do happen it’s right for public confidence that the decision to discharge a firearm is thoroughly examined.

‘We quickly sent IOPC investigators to the scene; they have already made good progress and seized evidence for examination.

‘We have already viewed the officers’ body worn video to make an initial assessment of the circumstances.

‘The footage verifies that the man was in possession of a knife as he approached the officers. All of the officers involved are being treated as witnesses at this time.’
