Popular and award-winning Actor Akshay Kumar, who worked with Asrani in multiple films, posted on X, “Speechless with grief at the passing of Asrani ji. Another comment read: “Literally played so-so many iconic roles, making every frame brighter.”

A Career That Defined Indian Comedy

Asrani’s career spanned more than six decades, starting with his debut in the 1967 film “Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan”. He rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with standout comedic and supporting roles in classics like “Sholay” and “Amdavad No Rikshawalo.”

He became a household name for portraying the eccentric jailer in “Sholay” and for his Hindi voiceover work as Zazu in Disney’s “The Lion King”, originally voiced by Rowan Atkinson.

In the 1980s alone, Asrani appeared in over 100 Hindi films, solidifying his place as one of the most prolific actors of his generation.

His Later Years & Legacy

Asrani also directed several films, including “Salaam Memsaab” and “Chala Murari Hero Banne”, both of which he also starred in. In later years, he continued to work steadily, appearing in projects like “Dream Girl 2” and “Non Stop Dhamaal” in 2023. Two of his final films, “Haiwaan” and “Bhoot Bangla,” are set to be released posthumously in 2026.

In a past interview with BBC Hindi, Asrani humbly reflected on his work, saying he didn’t see himself as just a comedian. “I am an artist who finds truth in every role,” he said (as reported by Metro).

Loved for his warmth, humor, and humanity, Govardhan Asrani’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema — but his laughter and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of millions.
