Over the summer, one of the young players who appeared to be making his mark with the Cowboys was undrafted free agent Zion Childress. He was so impressive after signing with the team out of Kentucky that, at one point, he was running with the first-team defense and showed enough versatility to see him making the team as a do-it-all backup in the Cowboys secondary. Childress could play in the slot, he could play on the edge and he looked physical enough to fill in at safety as well.
For a Cowboys team that was iffy when it comes to depth in the secondary, Childress seemed to be a godsend. He was an ideal candidate to replace the departed Jourdan Lewis among the DBs.
Ultimately, though, the Cowboys moved Childress to the practice squad after the initial 53-man roster was released. He was elevated twice this season, but moved back to the practice bunch, which was a costly maneuver–he was scooped up by the Texans, who put him on the 53-man roster.
Cowboys Bring Back Zion Childress
But on Monday, the Texans decided to let Childress go, which raised the opportunity to bring him back to Dallas. The Cowboys acted, signing Childress back to the practice squad once he cleared waivers.
The team’s website noted: “On Wednesday, the Cowboys brought back one of their UDFAs from the 2025 class in CB Zion Childress, signing him to the practice squad.
“Childress, who initially made Dallas’ 53-man roster after the preseason, was waived shortly afterwards but resigned to the practice squad and was elevated twice. In late September, the Houston Texans signed him to their active roster. Childress was waived by the Texans on Monday, and now returns to where he began his NFL career.”
Cowboys Secondary Has Struggled
The Cowboys secondary has been a massive disappointment this year, both because of underperformance and because of injury. As a whole, the Cowboys rate the eighth-worst defense for pass coverage in the NFL, with PFF grading them at 51.3 when covering.
Childress has had not real opportunity to change that, but the coming weeks might tell a different story.
As things stand, the Cowboys badly need depth in the defensive backfield, as Trevon Diggs missed practice again on Wednesday with a concussion.

Trevon Diggs Injury Has ‘No Reason to Dwell on It’
Diggs, of course, has been out since last Thursday because of a concussion he suffered at his home. While owner Jerry Jones sounded skeptical of the original report on Diggs, he has since backed off and appeared willing to accept Diggs’ explanation.
There has been talk, too, that the Cowboys would deal away Diggs. Jones said the whole issue has been overinflated.
“There’s no reason to dwell on it anymore here,” Jones said. “It’s what it is. Consequently, what we did see is we played pretty well out there. I don’t know the status of Diggs as we move forward, but I feel better about being able to play if we don’t have him out there.”
