SAN JOSE — A man suspected of driving drunk hit and killed a man walking on a freeway connector near downtown San Jose on Wednesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision was reported around 7:20 p.m. at the transition ramp from northbound Highway 87 to northbound Interstate 280, the CHP stated in a news release.
An initial investigation determined that a 52-year-old San Jose man driving a 2021 Hyundai when he lost control of the car and hit a man standing on the right shoulder.
The injured man, believed to be in his early- to mid-40s, died at the scene, the CHP said. His name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
The Hyundai driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. CHP Officer Ross Lee said it was not immediately clear why the victim was walking along the freeway connector, and that remains under investigation.
