‘I was on Celebrity Traitors – BBC cut the moment I sussed Cat Burns’

Warning: This article contains spoilers from The Celebrity Traitors episode 6.

Joe Wilkinson became the latest victim to be murdered in BBC’s The Celebrity Traitors last night — just as he was on the right track to catching a Traitor.

Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross, and Cat Burns struck again, bumping off Joe before somehow managing to survive another banishment.

The Faithful turned on ‘Big Dog’ Sir Stephen Fry – and still, they haven’t caught a single Traitor.

However, following his exit, Joe correctly guessed that Jonathan and Cat were Traitors, even if Alan had completely slipped under his radar.

Speaking to Metro after his elimination, the comedian revealed the moment he became sure Cat was a Traitor, in a scene that didn’t make it to air.

‘The only reason I chose Cat in the end was because someone said, “Look at the person you think of least.” You don’t really see it in the show, but I was hanging out with Cat quite a lot, and I probably trusted her as much as I did Joe Marler.

‘I couldn’t mentally choose Joe in my head as a Traitor — I just couldn’t do it. So I was like, “Who do I really trust?” Suddenly, I went, ‘Cat! Why do I trust Cat? It’s mainly because I’ve just been hanging out with her.”’

However, Joe admits he wouldn’t have gone for Cat — at least not yet.

‘I liked her too much,’ he concedes. ‘That’s the problem. I really liked her — she was just so cool and lovely to hang out with. So no, I wouldn’t have gone for her next.’

Cat might have accidentally backed herself into a tricky corner she can’t escape. She was a loud supporter of the ‘Big Dog’ theory, and with one Big Dog down, she now has to turn on her fellow Faithful, Jonathan.

For the first time in the game, all three Traitors have heat on them. No one’s trusted Jonathan from the start, but last night Alan dropped the ball by forgetting he had a shield, and others are beginning to look at the quieter players like Cat.

‘I think Cat will go the furthest,’ says Joe. ‘Alan saying he forgot he had a shield is enough. When you’re a Faithful and you have a shield, you can’t think about anything else. That will be his downfall, potentially. Jonathan has more heat on him than Cat.’

Joe adds that in more unseen scenes, he was constantly backing Alan — and genuinely meant it.

‘He completely pulled the wool over my eyes with Paloma [Faith]. That’s playing the game quick,’ says Wilkinson. ‘He didn’t take any warming up — he went straight in, and I would never have thought of it.

‘They can only show a certain amount, but I kept going, “I believe you, Alan,” and I really did. Maybe that shield would have thrown it for me, but it would have taken me a long time otherwise to believe he’s a Traitor.’

Despite being in constant contact with all the cast, Joe insists he still doesn’t know what lies ahead — but he does have some predictions.

As it stands, Kate Garraway, Nick Mohammed, and Lucy Beaumont are in line to be murdered and meet their killers face-to-face.

‘They won’t murder Kate,’ says Joe. ‘I can’t see why they would. If they killed off Nick, they might go, “Oh, that’s interesting because he mentioned these people,” and they’ll actually look at them. But killing Lucy will just do everyone’s nut in.’

Joe might have left The Celebrity Traitors without a chunk of the prize money, but he did gain a friend for life. The two Joes — Wilkinson and Marler — became the castle’s double act and were fast becoming a force to be reckoned with.

‘We text all the time still,’ says Wilkinson. ‘I was very lucky to have Joe in there. My wife described us as a couple of naughty schoolboys. We had such fun — but again, they can’t show everything. Occasionally, he’d go, “Well, Joe said this…” and find it really funny.

‘I do really trust him, but I also didn’t trust him not to drop me in it — in a funny way.’

Does Joe think his new close friend and namesake can go all the way to the final?

‘I think if he gets over this hump of being noticed at the moment, he can. But he’s got to get over this Jonathan thing and ride it out for a couple of days.

‘Nick might need to take him aside and go, “Look, go a bit quiet for a bit, steady the ship, and then pick your moment.”’

The Celebrity Traitors returns on Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
