As they head into a bye week, the Seattle Seahawks find themselves in three-way fight for the top spot in the NFC West. With a looming trade deadline, and the possible return of fullback Robbie Ouzts, the Seahawks are not sitting on the sidelines during their week off. The roster change-up continues as the season progresses. Included in their adjustment is the recent decision to release nine-year veteran Eric Saubert, according to the NFL’s transaction reports. Followed by a re-signing of the tight-end just two days later.
31-year-old Eric Saubert was a fifth round draft pick with the Atlanta Falcons back in 2017. After two Atlanta seasons, he was traded to the New England Patriots who waived him shortly after. He then spent time with the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Dallas Cowboys. He then played for the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers before the Seahawks.
Re-Signing
According to reports, the release of Saubert was strictly procedural, but the reasons behind the move are not known. Saubert went straight to free-agency, and despite reports that the Seahawks would likely sign him back to their practice squad, they signed him back into his vacant spot.
Despite just one target over 145 offensive snaps in 7 games, Sauber plays a crucial role on special teams. Specifically, the tight end performs well a blocker, which may be why they decided to keep him on.
In an interview through Seahawks Press Pass, Saubert emphasized his willingness to contribute to various aspects of the game, stating, “I’m open to any role given to me.” He went on to discuss his run game, pass game, and his role on special teams. Saubert continued on, comparing Klint Kubiak’s Seahawks offense to the San Francisco 49ers’. He noted similarities such as outside zone, while highlighting the unique aspects that Kubiak brings. Saubert also praised his teammates, including fellow tight ends AJ Barner and his excitement to improve and Elijah Arroyo’s developing potential.
Seattle’s Season
While resting up on their bye week, the Seahawk’s also signed wide receiver Tyler Broden to the practice squad and released wide receiver Tyler Scott. As the trade deadline nears, the Seahawks have been urged to replace Anthony Bradford as he continues to struggle on the field.
Prior to November 4th, plenty of options remain to replace the guard. For example, New Orleans right guard Cesar Ruiz who was selected first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Other notable players include Wyatt Teller, Joel Bitonio, or Evan Neal from the New York Giants, who have all been linked to rumors of trades as of late.
The Seahawks bye week comes after an at-home 29-17 win against the Texans. During which, Jaxon Smith-Njigba went off for the Seahawks again. He became the second player in franchise history to record three consecutive 100-yard games. His five 100-yard games this season are also tied for second-most in franchise history.
Thanks to an incredible performance this year by Sam Darnold, the Seahawks have recorded 5 wins and 2 loses. Following their bye week they will be on the road again and competing against the Washington Commanders.
