Rams Linked to Potential Trade Addressing Key Need Before Deadline

The Los Angeles Rams are well aware that a vaunted aspect of their roster has a potential Achilles heel, and the front office plans to address it before the 2025 NFL trade deadline passes them by.

What exactly the Rams will do remains unclear.

However, head coach Sean McVay left the door open for the Rams to explore trade options and a new report suggests they are doing just that.

Rams ‘Making Calls’ About CBs

The Rams are on their bye, but they are second in scoring and 12th overall defensively entering Sunday’s slate of games in Week 8. Moreover, they rank 16th against the run while ranking 13th against the pass with the trade deadline approaching.

Still, it is their pass defense that the Rams are looking to fortify.

“The Ravens, Colts, Lions and Rams are making calls for a corner,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini wrote on October 25.

Russini’s report does not expound on how far the Rams are willing to go to address their need for cornerback help. They lost Week 1 starter Ahkello Witherspoon, who suffered a broken collarbone in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans.

McVay has touted the group of Cobie Durant, Darious Williams, and Emmanuel Forbes.

“Forbes and Decobie continue to take steps in the right direction. I was really pleased with our defense. I thought it was awesome for D Will to be ready,” McVay said in September after the injury to Witherspoon. “You do feel fortunate to have the depth, where a guy like D Will can step up to be able to supplement both Decobie and Forbes.”

However, different comments from McVay after that seemingly set the stage for Russini’s report on the Rams’ trade deadline plans.

Sean McVay’s Comments Loom Large in Wake of Insider Report

The Rams will return from their bye to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 9 for their final contest before the trade deadline, which is on Tuesday, November 4 at 4 p.m. ET. Even though LA has allowed the seventh-lowest completion percentage, McVay’s comments loom large.

McVay tipped his cap to the San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Rams 26-23 in overtime in Week 5, leading to his comments about the roster.

Even then, McVay touted the Rams’ current cornerback group.

“I think we’re going to look into those things. We always want to try to be able to improve,” McVay told reporters on October 3. “I’m going to really do a deep dive into this tape. But I really like the group of players that we’re working with, and we want to continue to find ways to be able to put them in good positions to have successful outcomes.”

McVay cited “some error” on the Rams’ part in some of their coverages, but noted he did not want to delve too deeply into the team’s plans before examining the tape.

LA allowed 117 passing yards (and 179 rushing yards) to the Ravens in Week 6.

However, Trevor Lawrence passed for 296 yards against the Rams in LA’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 in London. That is the Jaguars QB’s season high, and could be the impetus for the Rams actively working the phones.
