Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has died at age 41 due to complications from kidney disease. The team confirmed his passing Saturday night. Mangold was one of the most respected players to wear the Jets uniform, known for his consistency, toughness, and leadership on and off the field.
“Nick was more than a legendary center,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”
Mangold played 11 seasons with the Jets after being drafted in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and was widely considered one of the best centers of his generation.
Nick Mangoldâs Battle With Kidney Disease
Earlier this month, Mangold shared that he had been battling chronic kidney disease caused by a genetic defect. He revealed in a letter to fans that he had recently started dialysis treatments while waiting for a kidney transplant.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote in a message addressed to âMy NY Jets community.â “I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”
Mangold also expressed his appreciation for the support he received. “This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me,” he said.
Remembering a Jets Great
Mangold and left tackle DâBrickashaw Ferguson were drafted by the Jets alongside in 2006, forming the core of the teamâs offensive line for a decade. He helped the Jets reach two AFC Championship Games and was a steady presence in the locker room through several coaching and quarterback changes.
“Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership,” said Jets Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson. “For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination, earning the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike. His contributions on the field were extraordinary â but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”
Mangold started every game for the Jets from 2006 to 2011 before an ankle injury sidelined him for the first time. He retired in 2018 after signing a one-day contract to officially end his career as a Jet.
A Legacy That Will Live On
After his retirement, Mangold remained close to the team as an ambassador and fan favorite. He remained active in community events and was a regular presence at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets and the NFL community are mourning the loss of a player who meant so much to the game and to those around him.
“Nick will forever be a Jet,” Johnson said. “Heâll be remembered for his heart, his strength, and the impact he made on everyone who knew him.”
