Tributes are pouring in for former New York Jets center Nick Mangold, who has died at 41 after complications from kidney disease. The longtime Jet, celebrated for his consistency and leadership on the field, is being remembered by teammates, fans, and fellow players as much more than a football star â he was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud family man.
The Jets announced the news Sunday morning, prompting an outpouring of support for Mangoldâs wife, Jenny, and their four young children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte.
âNick was more than a legendary center,â Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. âHe was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nickâs wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.â
Johnson added, âOn behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we offer our sincere condolences to Jenny, their four children â Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte â as well as to Nickâs extended family, friends, and all who loved him.â
Nick Mangoldâs Final Message Highlighted His Love for His Family
Earlier this month, Nick Mangold revealed that he had been battling chronic kidney disease caused by a genetic defect diagnosed in 2006. In a message to âMy NY Jets community,â Mangold shared that he was undergoing dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant and credited his family for keeping him strong.
âIn 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,â Mangold wrote. âIâm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.â
He continued, âThis situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me. They have been my rock every step of the way.â
âWhile this has been a tough stretch, Iâm staying positive and focused on the path ahead,â he said on October 14. âIâm looking forward to better days and getting back to full strength soon. Iâll see you all at MetLife Stadium and The Shoe very soon.â
Remembering a Jets Legend Who Put Family First
Mangold spent his entire 11-year NFL career with the Jets, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro honors. He anchored one of the leagueâs most dominant offensive lines and helped lead the team to consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances in 2009 and 2010.
âNick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership,â said Jets Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson. âHis contributions on the field were extraordinary â but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.â
Mangold retired in 2018 after signing a one-day contract to end his career as a Jet. He was inducted into the teamâs Ring of Honor in 2022 and had recently advanced in the Pro Football Hall of Fameâs Class of 2026 voting process.
