A person drove a vehicle off the Santa Cruz Wharf at 9:44 a.m. on Sunday, causing public safety agencies to launch a water rescue of the driver and a dog from the submerged vehicle, according to a City of Santa Cruz news release.
The search and rescue team extricated the victim and the dog from the vehicle, according to the new release, but it did not state the health status of the rescued occupants. The city’s news release did not identify the victim.
Santa Cruz Fire Department, Central Fire, California State Parks, Scotts Valley Fire and the Santa Cruz Police Department all responded to the incident and remained on scene.
The Santa Cruz Wharf has been reopened to the public with some restrictions for ongoing work by emergency crews.
