Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has not wavered in his support for his first-year offensive coordinator, Nick Caley, and delivered another endorsement of the former Los Angeles Rams assistant after defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8.
The Texans won 26-15, with the offense racking up a season-high 475 total net yards of offense.
Ryans spread the praise around, citing quarterback C.J Stroud, the offensive line, and the Texansâ defense. But his comments on Caley spoke volumes.
Texans HC DeMeco Ryans Stands Behind Nick Caley After Win Over 49ers
GettyHouston Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley looks on before a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Caley has been under fire all season as the Texansâ offense has looked disjointed en route to ranking 21st in scoring and 22nd overall coming into Sundayâs contest.
Houstonâs defense is Ryansâ specialty, with an experienced defensive coordinator in Matt Burke.
That side of the ball ranked first in scoring and fourth overall heading into the 49ers game, underscoring which side of the ball needed to pick up the slack. Caley, Stroud, and the Texansâ offense did just that against the 49ers.
âCaley did a great job day-to-day, and heâs done a great job with what weâre asking him to do. Heâs doing a great job. He has the guys. The guys have his back. Everybodyâs in this together, right? From Caley, myself, the players. Weâre all in this game together. So, it really doesn’t matter about outside noise, and we hear a lot of that every time you lose. Everybody wants to come up with something of get rid of everybody, fire everybody. Lose a game. You go out donât play well,â Ryans told reporters on October 25.
âThe noise is just a lot of people who donât know what they’re talking about. Because here in this room, as a team, we stick together as a team. And we know itâs only about us, right? You never let the outside noise creep in and control. Who we are, we know who we are, we know what weâre about, we know the formula, we know what it takes to go in games, and we just understand that outside noise is just noise.â
Ryans was not done downplaying outside opinions of the Texans.
DeMeco Ryans Gets Honest About Detractors
GettyHouston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans reacts against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Texans are 3-4 on the season, and their win over the 49ers marked their first against a team with a winning record this season. The 49ers were 5-2 entering Sunday, despite a slew of injuries on both sides of the ball, just as Ryansâ Texans have experienced.
Houston has missed Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon all season and was without its top two wide receivers (Christian Kirk and Nico Collins) in this contest.
The result only bolstered Ryansâ confidence in his group.
âAnybody whoâs giving the noise, we would never go ask them their opinion about how to game plan or how to play football,â Ryans said. âSo, we keep that in-house, and we go. We press forward, and we go out and play good football. Thatâs what itâs about.â
Up next, Ryans and the Texans will host the Denver Broncos in Week 9.
Texans âLocked Inâ vs 49ers
GettySan Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan congratulates Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans after their game.
Ryans also explained what the âmainâ difference was between this week and last, when the Texans lost to the Seattle Seahawks 27-19 on âMonday Night Football.â
âThe main thing, our guys just went out, and everybody was, I would say, locked in. Everybody had laser focus on their job, what we needed to do. Guys made the plays we were supposed to make. I thought C.J. made great decisions with the football. When it wasnât there, checking the ball down to the backs, our backs played well,â Ryans said.
âIt starts up front, always. And when our offense line can do that control, the line of scrimmage, things will go well for us. But overall, couldnât be more proud. Defensively, they also did an outstanding job.â
Ryans also touted the Texans for withstanding the 49ersâ big plays, calling his team âresilient.â
âThey continue to bounce back,â Ryans said. âThey didnât let one big play affect it; They were still able to come out and continue to press forward, play together, and finish the game.â
