The trendiest NFL Most Valuable Player candidate headed into Week 8 was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who had the second longest streak in NFL history of games with 3 or more touchdowns and no interceptions at 4 games before traveling to face the Denver Broncos.
All of that MVP talk came to an abrupt end following a 44-22 loss in which Prescott couldn’t get the high powered Cowboys offense going in a 44-22 loss which dropped Dallas to 3-4-1.
Not only did Prescott play bad, he was thoroughly outplayed by his young counterpart in second year Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, who went 19-of-29 passing for 247 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Prescott went 19-of-31 passing for 188 yards, no touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
“So much for that ‘Dak MVP’ talk,” sports commentator Skip Bayless wrote on his official X account following the game.
Prescott was pulled from the game with 5 minutes left and the game out of reach and replaced by backup Joe Milton.
“We can still support Dak but boy that MVP stuff can stop now,” Chop Sports Media’s Dave Sturchio wrote on his official X account.
“I’m supposed to believe that Dak is an MVP candidate?” X user Oliver wrote on his official acount. “Bo Nix is more of an MVP candidate than Dak.”
Prescott Called ‘Biggest Loser’ After Loss to Broncos
Bleacher Report singled Prescott out as the “Biggest Loser” for the Cowboys following the loss to the Broncos, who won their fifth consecutive game.
From B/R: “Dak Prescott has been a dark-horse MVP candidate for most of the season. Considering how well he had been playing — and how bad Dallas’ defense is — getting into the postseason might have been enough to earn him serious award consideration However, Prescott had his worst game of the season on Sunday. He threw two picks, misfired on several other throws, and failed to score a touchdown for only the second time this season.”
It’s the first major setback in what has been shaping up to be a career year for Prescott, who put the Cowboys in a position to win several games they eventually lost or tied in large part because they also have the NFL’s worst defense.
Despite the terrible game against the Broncos, through 8 games, Prescott is still second in the NFL in passing with 2,069 yards, 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions while completing 70.3 percent of his passes.
“Dak Prescott is playing out of his mind so far this year,” ESPN’s Mina Kimes said on The Mina Kimes Show with Lenny on October 2. “Which, like, every few years we get this. We get like an insane Dak season where he’s just dropping dimes … like this is prime Dak right here. Even though he’s 10 years into his career. This is prime Dak. He has every single answer.’
Prescott Finished as NFL MVP Runner-Up in 2023
While NFL MVP talk this early in the season is new to Prescott, he’s been there at the end of the season before.
In 2023, Prescott finished as NFL MVP runner-up to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
One award Prescott still might be in the running for is NFL Comeback Player of the Year. In 2024, Prescott endured what was probably the worst year of his career after he missed the final 9 games of the regular season with a hamstring injury that eventually required surgery.
