Who the New York Jets’ starting quarterback will be coming off the bye week remains a mystery.
Head coach Aaron Glenn punted when asked if Justin Fields will remain QB1 for the Week 10 Cleveland Browns game.
“Well, Coz [Brian Costello of the New York Post], I think you know what my answer is going to be on that. This is the bye week, and we are going to focus on us. Listen, I have time to make that decision. That is one of the good things [about] the bye week,” Glenn responded with a smile and a laugh.
“But seriously, this really gives us a chance to hone in on the good, bad, and the ugly and try to get those things worked out. We know we have a ways to go,” Glenn added.
Insiders Respond to Glenn’s Comments on Jets QB Situation
Brian Costello, who asked Coach Glenn the question at the presser, described him as, “A very happy Aaron Glenn this morning after a win. He had good things to say about offense, defense, and ST [special teams]. Would not commit to Justin Fields against the Browns in two weeks.”
ESPN’s Rich Cimini posted on social media that, “Aaron Glenn was very pleased with the way Justin Fields managed yesterday’s game, but he declined to commit to Fields as his starter. So Fields, despite playing one of the best games of his career, remains in limbo (at least publicly). How could Glenn not ride with Fields? Glenn [is] probably just playing games again.”
Glenn Is Staying Consistent With His QB Gamesmanship Strategy
Ahead of Week 8, Coach Glenn refused to reveal his quarterback plan to the media. He believed that the Jets gained a tactical advantage with the Bengals being left in the wind on the decision.
The strategy worked. The Jets won their first game of the season. Now, how much of the victory was because Cincinnati had to split time during the week to prepare for Fields and Tyrod Taylor? We will never know the answer to that question, but if it was even a 1% difference, then it was worth it for Coach Glenn.
After the Jets-Bengals game, Coach Glenn revealed that there was a quarterback competition between Fields and Taylor in the buildup to the game. However, Taylor wasn’t healthy enough to suit up, which forced Coach Glenn’s hand.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported last week that Coach Glenn was leaning toward starting Taylor.
It Really Feels Like Fields Has Earned His Gig Back
This feels like Coach Glenn is just playing the game, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, after Fields’ performance versus the Bengals, he has more than earned his job back if he was ever going to lose it in the first place.
Fields played with a newfound confidence, throwing for 244 passing yards, completing 66% of his passes, and throwing a touchdown pass with no turnovers.
This offseason, the Jets selected Fields as the chosen one. They built the team around him. Immediately crowned him the QB1 of the team. It would be surprising if they decided to go away from him especially coming off one of the best games of his career.
